MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Old Trafford legend Ryan Giggs has been offered the job to be the assistant manager of Manchester United, following a meeting with the reported soon to be manager Louis van Gaal on Wednesday, reports said.

It is also understood that Manchester United have also reached out to former coach Rene Meulensteen to make a stunning return as the club seek to win back the fans.

According to a report by ESPN, Giggs, who acted as interim boss for the final four games of the season after the sacking of David Moyes, held talks on Wednesday with Van Gaal.

It is believed that the meeting between the two covered a number of future items, including the players Van Gaal would like to sign in the summer and those he thinks have no future at the club.

Van Gaal is currently with the Netherlands, preparing his team for next month’s 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil and he wants this to be his main focus until the tournament ends.

At the same time though, Manchester United have a job to do to sign players in the summer transfer window and Van Gaal, reports claimed, wants Giggs to be his right-hand man and work with United’s executive vice-president Ed Woodward in getting the players he wants.

The 62-year-old Van Gaal is a former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Ajax manager who has been described as the ideal man to replace Moyes.

Both Man United and Van Gaal have kept quiet on the subject about who will be the next manager at the club, but several sources and those close to both parties say it is only a matter of time before the Dutchman takes over at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, after leaving the club last summer when Moyes was appointed, it is understood that highly-rated coach Meulensteen is set to be handed another coaching role with the club.

Meulensteen was part of the back room staff that former manager Sir Alex Ferguson put together during his trophy winning time at the club.
