LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Rafael Benitez is set to become the new Chelsea FC reports from media sources have reported on Wednesday morning.
Chelsea announced the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo, hours after the club suffered a disappointing 3-0 Champions League defeat to Juventus in Turin and made it clear that the they would announced the new manager shortly.
Former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, out of a year-long sabbatical from football – had been the hot favourite to be lured for the vacant job, but new reports are claiming that former Liverpool manager Benitez is the man that will be the next boss.
Benitez confirmed his interest in the Chelsea FC job and it is believed the Spanish coach could be in the dugout at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
“I have just found out [about Di Matteo]. Obviously Chelsea is a top side and they can compete for trophies so it goes in this category,” Benitez said.
“In football a lot of people are talking so we will see what happens in the next few days. I am looking for a club that can challenge for trophies and Chelsea is one of these clubs.”
