RESULTS: 2017 French Open Men’s Singles Round 1 – DAY 2

PARIS, Sporting Alert — Results on Day 2 from the 2017 French Open Men’s Singles Round 1 matches on Monday, May 29.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic made a winning start under new coach Andre Agassi on Monday after sailing past Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-3 6-4 6-2 in the first round of the 2017 French Open on Monday.

A less than attractive few months of action on the court led Djokovic to part ways with his entire coaching team earlier this month before selecting American tennis legend Agassi to guide him during the French Open.

“It is an incredible honour and good luck to have him with me on the team,” the second-seeded Serbian told reporters.

“Every day is special with him. I am learning something every day.”

Djokovic added: “I will try to use the time with him as best as I can. Plenty of information, plenty of things to process.

“I think this is exactly what I needed at this moment, a person like him who understands the reactions as a tennis player and a person.”

“I changed everyone (coaches). But I will not change my wife. My wife never.”

The 12-times grand slam champion and 30-year-old revealed that he was happy with how he started his title defense.

“It was different for me being here this time because being defending champion gave me a lot of relief,” Djokovic said.

“I wanted to start off well, engage all engines in the right way which I have done.”

Also winning in their first round game was Spain star Rafael Nadal, who easily put away Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-1 6-4 6-1 to launch his bid for a 10th French Open trophy.

The fifth-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada beat Steve Darcis of Belgium, 6-3 6-4 6-2 in his first round match, while No. 7 seed Marin Cilic of Croatia defeated Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis 6-3 6-3 6-3 to progress to the second round.
