Novak Djokovic: Australia Open 2017

RESULTS: Australian Open 2017 Men’s Singles Round 1: Jan. 17

MELBOURNE, Australia – The following are the results from the Australian Open 2017 Men’s Singles Round 1 matches that took place on Tuesday in Melbourne.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic was among the high-seeded players securing a win in their opening round on the second day of action at the year’s opening grand slam.

The No. 2 Serbian started his bid for a record seventh Australian Open title with an impressive 6-1 7-6(4) 6-2 win over Fernando Verdasco of Spain.

Djokovic entered the game a bit cautious against the man who knocked Rafa Nadal out in the first round last year, but he made it looked easy against the hard-hitting Spaniard at a floodlit Rod Laver Arena.

The Serbian secured the win to set up a second round match against Ivan Dodig of Uzbekistan who defeated Croatian Denis Istomin in his round 1 game.

Also grabbing victories in Australian Open 2017 Men’s Singles round 1 matches were No. 3 Milos Raonic of Canada and No. 9 Rafa Nadal of Spain.

Raonic brushed aside Dustin Brown of Germany, 6-3 6-4 6-2 in his opening round game on Tuesday, while Nadal took care of another German, Florian Mayer, 6-3 6-4 6-4 in his round 1 match.

Winning in the round on Tuesday as well were No. 6 Gael Monfils (France), No. 8 Dominic Thiem (Austria), No. 11 David Goffin (Belgium), No. 13 Roberto Bautista (Spain), No. 15 Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria), No. 18 Richard Gasquet (France) and No. 20 Ivo Karlovic (Croatia).
