Lakers Win, As Kobe Watch From Bench

Steve Blake scored 16 points and Pau Gasol and Chris Kaman combined for 26 and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Denver Nuggets 90-88 on Tuesday night in preseason action.

Blake made one of his two free throwers with 0:06 left for the Lakers and then Jordan Hamilton missed a jumper and Anthony Randolph, a layup, as time expired for the Nuggets.

Gasol scored 14 points and eight rebounds and Kaman added 12 points and seven boards for the Lakers, as the recovering Kobe Bryant rejoined the team and watched from the sidelines.

Bryant had been overseas for a checkup and he shockingly received an ovation when he entered the Citizens Business Bank Arena in warm-ups during the team’s drills before the start of the game.

The All-Star guard, recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, watched his teammates from the bench as they battle with Denver, who was led by JaVale McGee, who finished the game with 14 points.

J.J. Hickson added 13 points and 10 rebounds, Evan Fournier ended with 10 points and Kenneth Faried contributed 10 boards in the defeat.

Jordan Hill pulled down 12 rebounds for the Lakers in the win.

Also picking up victories on Tuesday were the Oklahoma City Thunder, who defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 103-99 in Manchester England and the Brooklyn Nets, which beat the Washington 111-106 in overtime.

Starting point guard Reggie Jackson finished with a team high 29 and Kevin Durant scored 14 of his 21 points in the third quarter for the Thunder.

“We demand a level of play and he is as coachable as any player I have seen in this league,” OKC head coach Scott Brooks was quoted as saying.

“He is going to continue to get better. He has the talent, the skill, the body, the touch, the gifted game. But he also has an unmatched work ethic.”

Also winning were the Detroit Pistons, which crushed Maccabi Haifa 91-69

  1. Head's up… Pau Gasol bidding ends at 7 PM tomorrow on jockbrokers.com. If you are going to get him, I would do it now.
