LONDON (SportingAlert) – Results and summaries from the English Premier League games that took place on Saturday (Sept. 20).
The day saw Liverpool and Aston Villa both falling to heavy defeats, while West Ham United and Arsenal where on the other side of those results.
Mesut Ozil, Danny Welbeck and an Aly Cissokho own goal guided Arsenal to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on the road, while West Ham United stunned Liverpool 3-1 at Upton Park.
“It’s a well-deserved victory – it’s not a lucky one, it’s not Liverpool having an off day, it’s West Ham being absolutely brilliant on the day,” West Ham boss Sam Allardyce told Sky Sports 1.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted: “We’re a team who are associated with coming out very quickly and for some reason we didn’t get going today.
“Be fair to West Ham, they pressed the ball very well and we were unable to play around that. We were 2-0 down very early and from that point it was very difficult for us to come back.
“We got back into the game at 2-1 and from that, probably up until they got the third goal, we had decent control of the game but the standard of our play was nowhere near what we’d expect.”
In other results, 10-man Swansea City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at home with Victor Wanyama scoring the winning goal in the 80th minute. The Newcastle United against Hull City and Queens Park Rangers vs Stoke City both ended 2-2, while Burnley and Sunderland finished 0-0.
