MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says there is no difference between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – hailing both players as the best in the world right now.
The headlines in the last few years, and especially since the Portuguese made his £80million move from Old Traford to Real Madrid, has been dominated by Ronaldo v Messi with both making every effort to live up to the hype.
Messi has been incredible so far this year, scoring 90 goals and counting as he smashed the record for goals scored in a calendar year.
Ronaldo, although not scoring as many goals as his Barcelona rival, has been just as important and as impressive for Real Madrid this year and Ferguson, who admits to being a fan of both players, insists his former superstar winger is as good as the Argentine maestro.
“There is nothing between the two of them, they are both the best players in the world,” Ferguson said, according to The Sun.
“There will always be great players. You can go back to the 60s with Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas and Eusebio.
“Going into the 70s you had Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer and then in the 80s Marco van Basten.
“I think what we are seeing at the moment is that Messi is an exceptional player from this decade, along with Cristiano.
“I don’t think the rivalry against each other bothers them.
“I think they have their own personal pride in terms of wanting to be the best and I certainly know that about Cristiano because he played here at United for six years.”
Several pundits have been making their own assessment of the two with many, according their stats, saying Ronaldo’s experienced in playing in other leagues makes him slightly a better player than Messi, who has only been playing for Barcelona.
