The two players came into the contest levelled on goals and each bagged two apiece in the Sunday classic at the Nou Camp.
Ronaldo took advantage of some poor defending and unimpressive goalkeeping from Dani Alves and Victor Valdes to Real Madrid a 1-0 lead after 23rd minute.
However, Messi cancelled that goal when he made Pepe paid for some poor defending at the other end in the 31st minute.
Messi was on target again in the 61st minute when he gave Barcelona the lead with a brilliant free-kick, other to see Ronaldo hit back five-minute later to level things up.
With the tie, Barcelona kept an eight point advantage over the defending champions Real Madrid.
Jose Mourinho is keeping his finger cross though as his superstar Ronaldo, who has now netted for the sixth straight Clasico, picked up a shoulder injury.
He first suffered the problem attempting an over head kick and landed on his shoulders. A strong tackle from Adriano later on saw him holding that area again.
Meanwhile, the Real Madrid coach was happy with the overall performance of his team and game altogether.
He said: “For me, the result reflects the match. I, as a coach, I enjoyed it, and I’m sure Vilanova and the players did too. I’ll take this outcome.
“It is a true reflection of the match overall. It was tightly fought and nobody knew what the outcome was going to be until the last minute. There were opportunities to score for both teams.”
