Rooney, who suffered a head injury during training on Saturday, was not on the team bus that arrived at Anfield, which means he has been ruled out of the contest.

“It’s disappointing obviously but whatever has happened has happened and we can’t go back now. We have quality players that can fill the void,” he told SkySports.

“As per usual it will be a tough game, Liverpool will start well and the fans will get behind them. It will be a great atmosphere and hopefully we can come out victorious.”

Winger Antonio Valencia is out of the starting team that played against Chelsea last Monday, with Ryan Giggs and Ashley Young coming into the starting XI.

Danny Welbeck and Robin van Persie lead the attack for Manchester United, while Javier Hernandez and Nani are both on the bench.

United defender Rio Ferdinand says it is disappointing not to have Rooney in the lineup today.

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers made one change from the side that beat Aston Villa 1-0 last weekend with defender Kolo Toure being ruled out with the groin injury he suffered in the League Cup win over Notts County.

The former Manchester City centerback has been replaced by Martin Skrtel, who returns from an injury himself.

With Luis Suarez still out suspended, England international Daniel Sturridge leads the attack, while Steven Gerrard, Lucas and Jordan Henderson in the starting team as well.
