MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wayne Rooney has asked for a transfer from Manchester United at the end of the season.
At the same time, the boss said the frontman wants to take some time to think about what exactly he wants to do.
Media reports have been circulating about the future of the England international and manager Ferguson, who omitted the striker from his match day squad for Sunday’s clash with Swansea City, says Rooney was not keen to play because he has asked for a transfer.
Manchester United, on goals from Javier Hernandez and the game winner from Rio Ferdinand, won the game 2-1 in Ferguson’s final game in charge at Old Trafford before retiring at the end of the season.
“I don’t think Wayne was keen to play simply because he’s asked for a transfer,” Ferguson said.
“I think he wants to think things through in his mind; I think that’s a good idea.
“We’re not going to let him go.
“I think he’s maybe a bit frustrated that he’s been taken off once or twice in the last few weeks.”
