Runners warned: Boston Marathon Live on Universal Sports.com

BOSTON (Sporting Alert) — Organizers at the 2012 edition of the Boston Marathon have cautioned runners about the expected temperatures for Monday morning’s race.

Universal Sports.com will have live streaming coverage:

Coverage begins at 9:30 AM ET.

The weather is expected to be warmer than normal and Boston Marathon Co-Medical Directors, Dr. Pierre d’Hemecourt and Dr. Sophia Dyer – believes those lining up should be keeping close tabs on the situation.

“We are looking closely at the current weather situation which is projected  to be quite warm,” a statement said. “If the temperatures reach certain levels, running will put even the most fit athletes at risk for heat injury.”

Inexperienced runners are being warned to quit early or not race at all should they face problems coping with the conditions.

“We are now making the recommendation that if you are not highly fit or if you have any underlying medical conditions (for example-cardiac disease, pulmonary disease or any of a number of medical problems), you should NOT run this race,” they said.

They also recommended: “Inexperienced marathoners should not run. Those who have only trained in a cooler climate and who may not be acclimated (for at least the last 10 days) to warm weather running conditions should also consider not running.”

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya will be favourite to win the men’s race and he’s looking to clinch an Olympic Games spot.

Kenya’s Wilson Chebet and Ethiopian Gebregziabher Gebremariam are seen as the top challengers to Mutai.

Defending champion Caroline Kilel of Kenyan, who collapsed at the finish line last year after winning is looking forward to repeat that result again. She will look to emulate the accomplishments of Catherine Ndereba, who won back-to-back Boston Marathon races in 2004-2005.
