Rutgers fires basketball coach Mike Rice after abuses

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sporting Alert) — Rutgers men’s basketball coach Mike Rice was fired by the University on Wednesday, following video footage showing him verbally and physically abusing his players.

The cries for Rice’s head came on Tuesday after ESPN aired a videotape on it show “Outside the Lines” showing the coach throwing basketballs at the players, as well as pushing, grabbing and directing homophobic slurs towards them during training sessions.

Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said measures were put in place to try and help Rice, but admits that he was wrong in trying to fix the situation.

“I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice,” Pernetti said in a statement on the school’s website.

“Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong.

“Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.”
