NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich did what he thought was right for his own players and ended up being sanctioned by the NBA.
With four games in five nights, Popovich decided to send home some of his key players, including Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green before the trip to Miami Thursday night, a decision that saw the Spurs being fined $250,000 on Friday night.
”The result here is dictated by the totality of the facts in this case,” Commissioner David Stern said in a statement.
”The Spurs decided to make four of their top players unavailable for an early-season game that was the team’s only regular-season visit to Miami.
“The team also did this without informing the Heat, the media, or the league office in a timely way.”
Miami Heat went on to win the game 105-100, but had to dig deep into its reserves to avoid the shocking upset.
