NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – Scores and results from the US Open Women’s and Men’s Singles Round 2 matches on Wednesday’s Day 3 of action.

Among the highlighted players picking up wins in the second round on Wednesday were men’s world number one and top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia, as well as women’s seventh seed Roberta Vinci of Italy and the 14th seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.

Defending men’s champion Djokovic earned a free passage into the third round of the tournament when his opponent Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic was forced to withdraw from their match due to an injury.

The walkover, which came about after Vesely suffered a left forearm injury, presented Djokovic with an additional break to rest his left wrist injury before his next encounter.

Djokovic struggled with his fitness in his round 1 win against Jerzy Janowicz of Poland on day one, and this break will give the top-seed more time to receive treatment.

Spain’s fourth seed Rafa Nadal beat Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-0 7-5 6-1 in his round 2 match to stay in the hunt of winning the US Open this year.

Also winning on the men’s side on Wednesday was No. 23 seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa, who beat Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4.

However, No. 5 seed Milos Raonic of Canada was beaten 6-7(4) 7-5 7-5 6-1 by Ryan Harrison of USA) and No. 18 seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay went down to Spain Nicolas Almagro 7-6(5) 6-4 7-6(9).

In US Open women’s singles round 2 matches on the third day, Roberta Vinci, the Italian No. 7 seed, beat USA’s Christina McHale 6-1 6-3, while No. 14 Petra Kvitova defeated Cagla Buyukakcay of Turkey 7-6(2) 6-3.

The 12th seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia beat Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina 6-7(5) 6-2 6-2, with Ukrainian No. 22 seed Elina Svitolina beat USA’s Lauren Davis 6-1 4-6 6-3.

In another round 2 match, the 13th seeded Johanna Konta battle through a health scare to secure her place in the third round of the tournament with a 6-2 5-7 6-2 win over Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova.

The Great Britain player, leading by a set and hunting another point in the second after finding herself down in that period, suddenly collapsed to her knees, and started to struggle to catch her breath in humid temperatures.

She had to receive treatment from the umpire and then from a doctor, which resulted in her dropping the set on a double fault.

Konta, after a bathroom break, returned to take the third set and advanced into the third round.

Two-time finalist and former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark continued his impressive form at the tournament by beating another seeded player – this time No. 9 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, 6-4 6-4, to book her place into round 3.
