Real Madrid jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace inside the first 16 minutes of play.
However, Arjen Robben scored a vital penalty kick in the 27th minute to level up the scores on aggregate for Bayern Munich, which won the first leg 2-1 at home lat week.
The identical scorelines meant that the winner had to be decided by the dreadful spot kicks and the visitors took the tie 3-1.
Several key players, including Kaka and the every reliable Ronaldo missed their penalty kicks in the shoot-out, but manager Jose Mourinho insists he it wasn’t his star player’s fault the team didn’t win.
“Cristiano had to fail someday,”Mourinho said after the game. “I don’t want to be radical and say if he or someone else is the best, I do not want to go there. We are talking about Messi and Cristiano, two unique players.
“But this season, Cristiano has been better and a difference-maker. If Barca and us have not made it to the final, it is both our fault. After two hours of working to our limit, going to penalties is not easy. The luck was with them.”
Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gomez and David Alaba were the scorers for Bayern Munich in the shoot-out.
