(Sporting Alert) — Jonny Evans is set to return for Manchester United for Sunday’s Barclays Premier League clash against Southampton at St Mary’s.

Evans has recovered from an ankle operation he had this summer and he is expected to partner Nemanja Vidic in central defence.

This means that Michael Carrick will return to regular duties in midfield with Tom Cleverley expected to make way.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Phil Jones (back) and Rio Ferdinand (groin) on the bench after they returned to training, although its very unlikely to be involved.

Wayne Rooney (thigh) and Ashley Young (knee) both missing because of injuries so Nani could return after missing the last game.

Robin van Persie will start once again, with Shinji Kagawa playing behind him.

Evan, who watched Southampton fight brilliantly against Manchester City before ending up losing 3-2 believes it will be a tough game for Manchester United.

Southampton have lost both of their games but they’ll want to do well at home against us,” he said on the club’s official website at www.manUtd.com.

“I think everyone, especially the teams that come up, will be targeting their home games for points and they’ll want to get their season up and running this weekend. So we’ll be expecting a really tough game.”

Meanwhile, Southampton are unlikely to feature its two new signings in Japan defender Maya Yoshida and Zambia striker Emmanuel Mayuka.
