After Gonzalo Higuain had opened the scoring in the ninth minute, Di Maria and Ronaldo added goals in the 34th and 36th minutes, respectively

The pair were again on target, with Ronaldo netting in the 41st and Di Maria in the 45th – to give the visitors a comfortable 5-0 half-time lead.

With Barcelona losing for the first time in the league this season, Real Madrid cut the gap in the La Liga standings to 15 points.

Elsewhere on Sunday Adrian Lopez and Koke scored on either side of 45 minutes for Atletico Madrid to beat Levante 2-0 and moved within eight-points of Barcelona in the standings.

Osasuna picked up a 2-1 win over Deportivo in the clash of the bottom-placed sides, while Valladolid stopped Zaragoza 2-0.
