Lakers News: Howard, Gasol out indefinitely

(Sporting Alert) – Los Angeles Lakers stars Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol will both be out indefinitely with injury problems, a team report said on Monday.

Howard, who has a torn labrum in his shoulder and Gasol, who has a concussion, are joined by Jordan Hill, who injured his right hip in last night’s defeat against the Denver Nuggets.

The Lakers said in a press release that the players will be closely examine throughout the rest of the week before any further updates will be available.

The trio will now miss the Lakers road trip to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday and San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.

Lakers also have a very difficult clash against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday.

Pau Gasol will play for Lakers against Charlotte Bobcats tonight

LOS ANGELES (Sporting Alert) — Pau Gasol will return for the Los Angeles Lakers tonight, as the club looks to build on its two game win streak against the Charlotte Bobcats at Staples Center.

Gasol has missed the past eight-games for the Lakers because of tendinitis in both knees and the star forward is finally ready to be back on the court again.

He said on his official Twitter account: “Tonight I’m going to be back playing after being out for more than 2 weeks! Happy to be back on the floor with my teammates!

The Lakers have won its last two games after beating the Philadelphia Sixers 111-98 and the Washington Wizards 102-96 and the team is looking ahead to taking another win over a Bobcats (7-16) team, which has dropped its last 11 games.

Meanwhile, Lakers (11-14) star player Kobe Bryant is looking forward to having his good friend back on the floor with him again and he believes the Spaniard’s return will add a vital element to the team.

“When Pau gets back, we’re going to play through him a great deal,” Bryant told reporters after the win over the Wizards.

“Probably at the start of the shot clock, we’ll move around the perimeter, this that and the other. Last 10 seconds of the shot clock – when we don’t have anything – we’ll post him up.

“Then he can make plays and make guys better, which he’s fantastic at.”

Gasol’s return will mean Antawn Jamison will go back to the bench.

Lakers without Gasol vs OKC Thunder tonight

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (Sporting Alert) — The Los Angeles Lakers will again be without star forward Pau Gasol for Friday night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder here at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.

There were hopes that Gasol, who is still being bothered by knee tendinitis, would have been able to play after claiming that he is feeling better.

However, the Lakers announced on its official website at www.lakers.com, that despite his improvement, it wasn’t worth the risk of rushing him back.

Los Angeles (9-10) are coming off a comfortable 103-87 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night, a game in which Kobe Bryant reached 30,000 points in his career and he’s hoping to close out the road trip with another win against an impressive Thunder (15-4) which knocked them out of the playoffs last season.

The Thunder are blessed with a host of talents, despite the departure of James Harden, but Bryant singled out the speedy point guard Russell Westbrook and scoring machine Kevin Durant, as the two individuals who have attracted the most notice.

In fact, he sees a little of himself in the pair.

“They just don’t give a (hoot). That’s really it,” Bryant said. “Not too many players have had that.

“Michael (Jordan) had it. I had it. Durant has it. Westbrook has it. They just don’t care about pressure situations or criticism.”

Oklahoma City, which is 9-2 at home going into Friday night’s contest, is coming off a 117-111 win at the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday and will start big time favourites to go 10-2 after the game.

The Lakers continue to be without star point guard Steve Nash, who is still injured and back-up Steve Blake, who is also out because of an injury.

Dwight Howard and Antawn Jamison, who is starting in Gasol’s place and scored 15 points in his last two games are both looking good and could cause the Thunder problems.

All-in-all, Scott Brooks’ side is definitely the hot favorite to knock-off another LA side, this after beating the Los Angeles Clippers in overtime in November.
