HIGHLIGHTS – No. 10 Oklahoma Beats No. 6 Iowa State, Wins 6th Big 12 Title In A Row

By:KOBY FRANZ | Staff Writer Published on: December 19, 2020 6:29 pm Leave a Comment

ARLINGTON, Texas — —  No. 10 Oklahoma battled to a 27-21 victory against No. 6 Iowa State and captured its sixth successive Big 12 title at the 2020 Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship at the AT&T Stadium on Saturday.

Oklahoma Extends League Winning Streak

“I’ve felt tremendous excitement after each one of them, but this one does feel different … maybe the most unlikely,” said fourth-year Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.

Oklahoma’s streak of six successive league titles is the longest for a Power Five program since they won 12 in a row in the old Big Eight from 1948-59, according to the stats guru.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS – Box Score | Team Stats | Videos

Quarterback Spencer Rattler threw for 272 yards on 22-of-34 completed passes with a 45-yard touchdown to Marvin Mims. He also ran for another score for the Sooners (8-2, 6-2 Big 12) who led 24-7 at halftime before Iowa State made things a little more interesting in the second half.

Mims finished with 101 yards from seven catches and a touchdown.

Oklahoma jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter following Chandler Morris’ short run, Mims’ touchdown catch, and a 54-yard field goal by Gabe Brkic.

Rattler ran for a nine-yard score after Iowa State scored – to put the Sooners back up by 17 points at 24-7.

Hall Scares The Sooners

However, back-to-back scoring runs by Breece Hall gave Iowa State some hope at 24-21.

Gabe Brkic kicked a 32-yard field goal with 2:01 left to secure the win for the Sooners to avenged an early-season loss to the Cyclones (8-3, 8-1).

“When we were 0-2 in the conference, and I told them a place like OU there’s nowhere to hide. It’s not like we’re just going to go off and have a bad season and people aren’t going to pay attention,” Riley said.

“I think everybody in our locker room knew that this was possible at that point, and what a tremendous run it’s been.”

Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy was 27 of 40 for 322 yards and a touchdown. He, however, throw three picks.

“I still think Brock was really good,” Iowa State’s fifth-year coach Matt Campbell said. “I know there were times that the ball got turned, but there’s pressure. We’re nowhere close in that football game if Brock Purdy’s not our quarterback.”

Meanwhile, Xavier Hutchinson had 10 catches for 114 yards, while Charlie Kolar took six catches for 92 yards and a score for the Cyclones.

No.3 Virginia-No.12 North Carolina; No.8 Kansas-No.11 Iowa St.

By:Jeff-Wellin Published on: February 2, 2015 6:06 pm Leave a Comment

(Sporting Alert) — No. 3 Virginia will take on No. 12 North Carolina in what is expected to be an exciting ACC clash at Dean E. Smith Center on Monday night.

The Cavaliers (19-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday night after going down 69-63 to No. 4 Duke and they will be hoping for a quick response.

North Carolina (17-5) also fell at the weekend — losing 78-68 to No. 9 Louisville and they too will seek to bounce back from dropping their fifth game of the season.

Before losing to the Cardinals, the Tar Heels had won five straight games and 11 of the last 12 outings.

North Carolina comes into Monday night’s game rank 2nd in rebounds per game at 43.5 percent and 5th in assists per game at 17.4.

Virginia leads the nation in points allowed at 50.2 percent and after giving up 69 to Duke and head coach Tony Bennett wants his team to focus on defense again.

“We were able to learn some stuff from the Duke game that I think will help prepare us for Carolina, especially our transition defense,” assistant coach Jason Williford said in the build up to the game.

“We gotta be better in that regard. Transition defense is huge, and then offensive rebounds. We gotta keep them off the glass.”

The Cavaliers head into this contest with a dismal 6-65 record in Chapel Hill, while they are 3-23 at the Dean E. Smith Center.

Bennett is hoping for a change on Monday night.

“Hopefully we’ll be resilient. And there’s no better way to test it than at Carolina in a game against that kind of competition on the road.

“So we’ll have to be ready. I told the guys, it’s about trying to play some of our best ball as we’re heading into the stretch run of the season.”

Live action of this Atlantic Coast Conference battle will be live on ESPN, ESPN3, as well as the WatchESPN App.

Following this game, No. 8 Kansas and No. 11 Iowa State will do battle in Big 12 Conference play at Allen Fieldhouse.

“Today is another step for our team.”

Michigan State
Michigan State hunt first-ever NCAA team crown

Colorado heads into the weekend’s championships as the male team to beat, but head coach Mark Wetmore remains cautious about being made favorites to repeat as national champions.

“I’ll say I have a good team I’m excited about it,” Wetmore said ahead of the event. “It’s not an unbeatable team.

“They recognize it’s a new team, new opponents and a new day. I don’t think they feel extra pressure for that [repeating as team champions].

“I guess it does give me some level of confidence, more so than if they were seven freshmen.

“They have been pretty solid all season long. If they perform as they have so far in four races, I think they’ll do very well.”

Oregon sophomore Edward Cheserek, who became only the fifth freshman to win the men’s individual title last year, will be hoping to secure back-to-back crowns and with redshirt senior Eric Jenkins running well this season for the Ducks, the pair will be gunning to lead their team to an upset win against the Buffaloes.

Another men’s team to watch is Oklahoma State, who will be led by Kirubel Erassa.

The Cowboys are not expected to win the team title, but head coach Dave Smith is hoping his men can produce something special.

The veteran coach also wants his team to forget the rankings and just race hard.

“My hope and my expectation is that we run our best race of the season on Saturday,” Smith said. “I want us to compete hard, I want us to run smart and I want us to run tough.

“I think the guys’ attitude shows that they’re running to win. They don’t want to play for second or third or play it safe, and I even presented that to them.

“I told them we could play it safe and try and protect a trophy with a top-ten finish, or we could kind of swing for the fences and go for the win. They want to go for it, and that’s what you want in a team.”

SPARTANS HUNT WOMEN’S CROWN

On the women’s side, No. 1 Michigan State, led by Leah O’Connor, go in search of the program’s first-ever NCAA cross country championship and there are many who are backing them to go all the way.

The Spartans have enjoyed a very productive 2014 season and after taking over as the country’s No. 1 women’s program in the USTFCCCA National Coaches’ Poll in late October, they will be hoping to complete the job by winning in Terre Haute.

But No. 2 Georgetown, No. 3 Oregon, a very dangerous Iowa State, who is ranked No. 4 in the nation and No. 5 Arkansas are all teams capable of winning this women’s title.

Conference meet kicks off at 10 a.m. CT with the men’s 8,000-meter race. The women’s 6,000-meter run will follow at 11 a.m. CT. The event is free to attend.

The Oklahoma State men have dominated the Big 12 cross country scene since 2008 and enter Saturday’s championships as the five-time defending champions.

The Cowboys have claimed the national title three of the last four years, including a first place finish at last year’s NCAA Championship and head coach Dave Smith, whose team has been running well this season when at full straight, says this is certainly where the campaign starts.

“I feel like this is when our season starts — Big 12’s first, Regionals and then Nationals,” Smith said on the school’s website. “We want to win all three. The Big 12 is the first leg of that trio, so it is very important.

“Since 2005, the Big 12 has been the best cross country conference in the nation, so if you can win the Big 12 meet, you have a great shot to win the national title.”

On the women’s side, Iowa State, have won back-to-back Big 12 titles and finished 11th at the NCAA Championships last season.

The top men’s and women’s teams are crowned league champions, while the top 15 individuals in each race earn All-Big 12 honors. The top newcomer in each race will earn Newcomer of the Year accolades.

In the latest NCAA Division I national rankings, the Big 12 landed three men’s squads in the top 30. Oklahoma State claims the third slot in the nation. No. 27 Oklahoma is next, followed by No. 29 Texas. Iowa State represents the Big 12 women at No. 8 in the poll.

In men’s action, seven of the top 10 finishers from last year are slated to compete. OSU’s Shadrack Kipchirchir, Thomas Farrell, Kirubel Erassa and Shane Moskowitz, along with Texas’ Ryan Dohner and Craig Lutz, and last year’s first place runner, Kennedy Kithuka from Texas Tech, are top 10 returnees looking to take home the individual title.

Highlighting the women’s field, Texas’ Sara Sutherland returns after a third-place finish in 2012 alongside fellow Longhorn Marielle Hall who placed sixth in last year’s championship. Other top 10 returnees include Oklahoma State’s Natalja Piliusina and Monika Juodeskaite, and Iowa State’s Crystal Nelson and Samantha Bluske.

Video highlights and full results will be available following the races via the conference website at Big12Sports.com.

This marks the second time Baylor has hosted the event, having also played host in 2005.
