Ways To Watch Western Illinois (0-0) at Iowa (2-0) Preview – Dec. 3

By:Sports Desk Published on: December 3, 2020 1:40 pm Leave a Comment

The third-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes will battle the Western Illinois Leathernecks in a college basketball game from the Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday night.

Iowa (2-0) picked up wins over North Carolina Central on Wednesday and Southern to start the season and is expected to improve three straight wins after tonight’s game.

This will be a season opener for Western Illinois, which will take on its highest-ranking opponent in the last 20 years. Big Ten Network and its streaming applications will provide coverage of the game, which tips-off at 8:00 PM ET.

Big man Luka Garza leads Iowa in scoring and rebounds heading into this contest. He is averaging 33.5 points with 9.5 rebounds from the two outings while shooting 86.2% from the field and making 87.5% of his free throws.

Garza made 14 of his 15 shots, including all three of his 3-point shots for 41 points against Southern, while grabbing nine rebounds and three blocks in 29 minutes.

He was a perfect 12-for-12 from the field in the first half and scored 36 points in the win over the Jaguars last week.

“I don’t think I realized (I hadn’t missed a shot in the first half), I felt like every shot I took, I should have made,” Garza said after that Southern game. “The one I missed I felt like I should have made that as well. I have that confidence every time I step on the floor.

“I am a guy that thinks I can make every shot I take because I practice a lot.  When you work hard you’re able to make shots.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said: “I haven’t had too many guys score 36 in a half. I’ve had guys get on rolls over the years, but that’s a big number. They don’t have a lot of size, so kudos to our guys to recognize he had it going and to load him up.”

Guard Joe Wieskamp is averaging 12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds, while Patrick McCaffery contributes 11.5 points and Keegan Murray is supporting with 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game for the Hawkeyes, who are the top side in the Big Ten.

Monte Morris Pilots No. 14 Iowa State Past No. 4 Kansas

By:Adam Fratzke Published on: January 25, 2016 10:01 pm Leave a Comment

AMES, Iowa, Sporting Alert – Monte Morris flirted with a double-double and four starters scored in twin-digits to lead No. 14 Iowa State to an 85-72 win over No. 4 Kansas in college basketball action on Monday night. Replay: WatchESPN | Stats Link Box Score (.pdf)

Morris scored 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while dishing out nine assists and pulling down four rebounds for the Cyclones (16-4, 5-3 Big 12) to secure their fourth straight win, as they have now beaten teams ranked No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 in the current AP Top 25.

Georges Niang had 19 points on his way to passing Victor Alexander for fourth on Iowa State’s all-time scoring list.

With his total on Monday night, Niang, who also grabbed six rebounds and three assists, now has 1,895 college career points.

“We needed to get our best player going, and that was Georges,” Morris said. “When he gets it going, he’s hard to guard.”

Abdel Nader joined the 1,000 points club for ISU on the night as well after hitting all three of his 3-pointers in scoring 17 points. He also had four steals, three assists and three rebounds, while Matt Thomas finished with 13 points, six boards and four steals.

Perry Ellis led Kansas (16-4, 5-3 Big 12) with 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field.

Frank Mason III added 16 points and six rebounds, but had six turnovers in the game.

“I don’t think I did a good job of getting my teammates easy shots,” said Mason.

Wayne Selden Jr. ended with 11 points for the Jayhawks, who were suffering three successive Big 12 road losses for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

“We didn’t show much composure when it got hot,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “That was disappointing.”

He added: “We haven’t played with a lot of poise away from home.

“The things you have to do away from home, I don’t think we’re very good at doing them yet.”

As a team, Kansas shot 50 percent from the field on 29-of-58, while Iowa State went 51.6 percent from the floor on 32-of-62 shooting attempts.

Kansas led 43-36 at halftime, but was outscored 49-29 in the second half, as the Cyclones shot 64.3 percent in the final 20 minutes and hit 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

“We weren’t good enough defensively to win the game in the first half. They changed their mindset in the second half,” coach Steve Prohm said.

Up next for the Jayhawks is a date with No. 20 Kentucky on Saturday night at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence for the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

Iowa State will next face No. 5 Texas A&M at Reed Arena, in College Station, Texas, on Saturday.

NCAAF: Texas v Iowa State; No. 12 UCLA at Utah – Oct. 3

By:Sports Desk Published on: October 3, 2013 3:14 pm Leave a Comment

Texas Longhorns will play a non-Thanksgiving Thursday night football game for the first time in 20 years when they take on Iowa State this Thursday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.

RECEIVING

Since 1963, the Longhorns (2-2) has only played five games on a non-Thanksgiving weekday, while head coach Mack Brown has never led a Texas team on a Friday or a non-Thanksgiving Thursday.

Texas’ last non-Thanksgiving Thursday game was a 34-16 win over Houston in 1993.

“It is an opportunity to play in front of a whole lot of people,” Brown said. “We will be the focus of college football with Iowa State on Thursday night.”

The coaches and players have looked at this week’s practices differently. Sunday’s practice was like a typical Tuesday practice and the schedule was adjusted each day to prepare as if Thursday was a regular Saturday game.

In addition to the added burden of altering normal schedules for a Thursday game, facing the Cyclones on a weekday in Ames is a difficult task. Paul Rhoads’ squad is well-known for its success on Thursdays and Fridays.

Iowa State is 21-10 all-time in Thursday games and 10-2 in its last 12. The Cyclones’ upset victory over No. 2 Oklahoma State on a Friday in 2011 changed the BCS picture that year.

“They bring a lot of energy into Thursday and Friday nights,” Brown said. “It’s something that they obviously enjoy. We’re going to have to circle the wagons and get our guys ready to go.”

In the meantime, also on Thursday night, No. 12 UCLA will take on Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium, looking to keep their undefeated start to the season going in Salt Lake City.

The Bruins are coming off a 59-13 over New Mexico State on Sept. 21 and after sitting out the action last week, are ready to get back to action.

Also on the college football schedule on Thursday night is the clash between Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Monroe at James L. Malone Stadium.

Des Moines, Iowa – A strong closing sprint by Drake junior Brogan Austin saw him landing the men’s college and university 5,000 meters crown at the 2013 Drake Relays on Thursday night at Drake Stadium.

2013 Drake Relays Results | Quotes | Friday Schedule | ESPN3.com

Austin’s victorious effort saw him claiming the first Drake title at the relays since 1995.

“Words can’t explain it,” Austin said. “It was awesome. I’ve been trying to do it for several years now, I’ve gotten second place three times and I finally got the win this year. It’s just a relief, it feels good.”

He added: “I wanted to do it for Drake. I had a lot of people come out and support me tonight. Before the race

“I was just dying of nerves, a lot of people were very supportive throughout the week, saying ‘hey good luck’ and ‘let’s do it for Drake’ that’s what I wanted to come out and show Drake that we could do it, that Drake as a track team could do it.”

Austin was closely followed home by North Central’s John Crain, who ran 14:12.80 and Nebraska Kearney’s senior Tanner Fruit, who ran 14:14.58.

The women’s race was won by Risper Kimaiyo of UTEP in 16:18.00.

“I felt good through the race. This was my last outdoor competition in college, my last time at Drake. It’s a good way to finish,” Kimaiyo said.

Meanwhile, Iowa State and Notre Dame won the men’s and women’s university/college 4×1600 relay events.

Iowa State ended a four-year championship run by Big Ten schools in winning the women’s race – winning in a time of 19:16.69. Minnesota, the 2009 champions took second in 19:23.25, while last year’s winners Iowa were third.

The men’s race saw the Fighting Irish winning the event for the sixth time in the last 12 years and its seventh title overall with a time of 16:42.89.

NEW YORK (Sporting Alert, Box Score) — Cory Jefferson scored 23 points and Baylor led from the opening minutes on their way to winning the school’s first-ever NIT title with a 74-54 win over Iowa at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

Jefferson, who shot 8-of-11 from the field, also pulled down seven rebounds in his 25-minutes of action, while senior Pierre Jackson added a double-double of 17 points and 10 assists for the Bears (23-14).

Jackson, who averaged 19.8 points and 7.1 assists per game and recorded his fourth successive double-double in the tournament, received praise from his coach after being named Most Outstanding Player in the NIT tournament.

“You can put his numbers up with any guard in the country,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said.

“The bigger the stage, the bigger the moment, the bigger — better — he performs.”

Isaiah Austin collected 15 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, four assists and two steals in the win for Baylor.

Mike Gesell paced Iowa (25-13) with 13 points, while Aaron White added 12.

Star forward Roy Devyn Marble shot just 3-of-12 from the field, including 0-for-4 from three-point range and was held to six points in the defeat.

The Hawkeyes went 18-of-69 from the field for a disappointing 26.1 percent.

By:Adam Fratzke Published on: April 4, 2013 6:47 pm Leave a Comment

NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Second-rank Baylor and the third Iowa will meet on Thursday night for the NCAA NIT Tournament title at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Bears (22-14) knocked off Brigham Young Cougars (BYU) 76-70 in their semi-final on Tuesday night with Pierre Jackson starring with a double-double of 24 points and 10 assists in the victory.

Baylor were disappointed at missing out on making the NCAA March Madness tournament, but victory in the NIT would mean a lot to them as well.

“Well, I think there’s only two happy teams at the end of the year,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said.

“The team that wins the NCAA and the team that wins the NIT. We want to be one of those happy teams.”

The Hawkeyes (25-12), meanwhile, got past the highly fancied Maryland Terrapins 71-60 in their semis on Tuesday night, with junior forward Roy Devyn Marble leading the way with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Devyn Marble, who is averaging 15.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, is expected to be the main scoring theta to the Baylor Bear at Madison Square Garden.

Thursday night’s clash will be just the second in history between the two programs, with the  Hawkeyes coming away with a 67-44 victory almost 30-years-ago.

Iowa are on a four game winning streak and have won seven of its last eight games, Baylor at the same time, have won four straight as well, including five in its last six.
