MANCHESTER, Sporting Alert – Premier League sides Manchester United and Manchester City will both be in action in the Champions League on Wednesday.

EPL leaders Manchester City will be hoping to carry over their domestic form into Europe when they take on Sevilla in Group D action at Etihad Stadium.

The Citizens are sitting third in the group behind Juventus and Sevilla, but a win on Wednesday would see them moving into one of the qualifying spots.

Early team reports suggested that captain and leading defender Vincent Kompany is fit for the clash after overcoming a calf injury.

Fellow defender and left-back Aleksandar Kolarov is also available after he recovered from a hamstring problem.

Sergio Augero, David Silva and Fabian Delph are among those still out, while midfield player Samir Nasri is unlikely to feature as he has a slight hamstring injury.

Manchester City have wobbled somewhat at home in the Champions League, and manager Manuel Pellegrini hopes to fix this bad run.

“I don’t know the exact statistics but we must improve [our home form in the UEFA Champions League]. We are just thinking about this game, not the past,” he said at his press conference.

“I hope we are just thinking about the game tomorrow. All the other things are statistics or history that will not help us to win or lose.”

Manchester United, in the meantime, head to Arena Khimki to take on CSKA Moscow in Group B.

The Red Devils dropped its opener in the Champions League to PSV before bouncing back with a victory at home against Wolfsburg.

Louis van Gaal’s men are currently sitting second in the group and will be hoping to keep tabs on those around them.

In other Champions League games on Wednesday, Real Madrid travel to Paris to take on Paris St Germain, Juventus entertain Borussia Monchengladbach, Wolfsburg meet PSV, while Atletico Madrid play hosts to Astana.

Chile 2-0 Brazil; Vargas, Sanchez SCORE

By:OMAR HALL Published on: October 8, 2015 11:16 pm Leave a Comment

SANTIAGO, Sporting Alert – Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal both passed fitness tests and started for Chile in tonight’s South America World Cup qualifier against Brazil in Santiago. Tonight’s game is the opening World Cup qualifying match for both teams.

Follow Live Score Streaming Online

GOAL UPDATE: Chile took a 1-0 lead in the contest when Eduardo Vargas neatly guided home a free-kick cross in the 72nd minute. Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez netted the second for the home side in the 90th minute to secure all three points and send Brazil away empty handed. Chile win this one 2-0. Tonight’s win sees Chile joining Colombia and Venezuela as teams to have taken three points from their opening qualifying fixtures.

UPDATE: Both Chile and Brazil have made early substitutions. Brazil replaced defender David Luiz with his fellow PSG team-mate Marquinhos in what looks like an injury, while Chile have made a tactical switch – replacing Francisco Silva with Mark González.

————-

Sanchez and Vidal were doubtful for the game after picking up respective injuries on club duties, but it seems like their problems were minor and they are good to go.

Sanchez, who was dominant for Arsenal against Manchester United on Sunday will join Eduardo Vargas in the Chile attack, with Bayern Munich midfielder Vidal taking up his place in the middle of the park.

Mauricio Isla, Gary Medel, Marcelo Diaz, Jean Beausejour and Claudio Bravo all start as well for the home side.

Meanwhile, Brazil are without captain and leading forward Neymar, who is suspended for two games after his red card in the last Copa America outing.

This means Hulk will lead the attack with Chelsea duo Willian Oscar and Bayern Munich winger Douglas Costa supporting the big man on the front line.

Elias and Luiz Gustavo will pair off in the centre of the pitch.

The experienced Kaka is on the bench, along with Fernandinho, Marquinhos and Lucas Moura.

Brazil are expected to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, while Chile will lineup as 3-4-1-2.

MORE NEWS

Chile, the 2015 Copa America champions, are undefeated in their last eight games in all competitions and have won five in a row.

Only one draw has been in that period – a 3-3 tie with Mexico in the group stages at the Copa America tournament.

Interestingly, though, Chile’s last defeat came at the hands of Brazil during a friendly international battle at Emirates Stadium in London, in March.

Brazil have won its last two games (friendlies), including a commanding 4-1 hammering of USA in a warm-up clash.

However, Dunga’s men have dropped two of the last three competitive outings.

CHILE TEAM: Bravo, Jara, Valdivia, Diaz, Isla, Medel, Silva, Vidal, Beausejour, Vargas, Alexis Sánchez

BRAZIL TEAM: Jefferson, João Miranda, Dani Alves, David Luiz, Marcelo, Willian, Luiz Gustavo, Elias, Oscar, Douglas Costa, Hulk

Swansea Entertain Liverpool: EPL Live Scores and Team News

By:Reporting by Ron Snyder The Liverpool Man Published on: March 16, 2015 10:28 am Leave a Comment

SWANSEA (Sporting Alert) — Liverpool will look to keep the race for a top four finish interesting and Swansea City hunt a European place in the Monday night Premier League fixture.

Check out our live match centre | Follow Live Scores | Listen to live commentary

liverpool
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard looks ahead

The two sides will wrap up the latest round of games when they face-off at The Liberty Stadium.

Liverpool head into the contest five points behind fourth place Manchester United and the traveling boss Brendan Rodgers wants his side to continue its impressive form.

A win for the Reds will see them moving to 54 points, but Rodgers know that the travel to Swansea will not be easy.

Club captain Steven Gerrard is back in contention for the clash after missing the last seven games with a hamstring injury, but he must fight back for his place.

The veteran midfielder has been in and out of the lineup this season even when he is fit and Rodgers says the former England skipper is not an automatic pick for the game on Monday.

“I am respectful and this guy is one of the greatest players in the history of the Premier League and arguably the greatest player of this club,” the Reds boss said.

“But what I do know is that Stevie always puts the team first. I have huge respect for him whether he is playing or not playing and huge admiration for him as a player and person.

“But I am not one that makes emotional decisions on whether I like someone or not. For me it is about picking and finding the right balance in the team and what makes the team function to ultimately win.

“He still has big qualities that we will need between now and the end of the season.

“What you have seen over my time here is that I rely on the team. The team, of course, has to have good players in it, but ultimately it is about the team and what is going to benefit and how we can get results as a team.

“I will repeat again the most important thing is Steven is back fit and we have Lucas Leiva coming back too. The beauty of this season is that everyone has had an opportunity in the first three or four months and then we have found a way to win.

“It is something everyone has to respect. It is about the team and the spirit of the team and I will always pick the best team I feel to win a game.”

Liverpool also revealed that defenders Martin Skrtel (head) and Mamadou Sakho (hip) are also expected to be fit, but midfielder Joe Allen remains doubtful with a hip problem.

In the meantime, Swansea City, which sit ninth on 40 points can move up a notch with a win as the race for Europe places heats up.

Striker Bafetimbi Gomis is expected to be available for the Swans after collapsing during the 3-2 defeat at Tottenham 12 days ago.

The club revealed that Gomis suffers from a vasovagal condition which causes low blood pressure, and it caused the Frenchman to faint at White Hart Lane.

He returned to training this week and has been cleared by a specialist to play, but manager Garry Monk will be keeping a close eye on the forward.

“Bafe knows better than anyone what measures to take,” Monk said. “I understand there are questions people want answered but the issue is not as big for Bafe and the people at the club.

“He has lived with it his whole life, it happens occasionally and when it does so in a public place that scrutiny comes with it.

“But he has trained as normal this week and does the same as every player, and if you look at his life there are more days when he has been fine rather than when something has happened.”

Liverpool will be keeping a close eye on former player Jonjo Shelvey, who has scored three goals (one own goal) in as many games involving these sides and is pumped up for the home contest.

Swansea (squad): Fabianski, Naughton, Fernandez, Williams, Taylor, Cork, Ki, Shelvey, Routledge, Sigurdsson, Gomis, Tremmel, Rangel, Amat, Fulton, Carroll, Britton, Montero, Dyer, Emnes, Oliveira, Grimes, King.

Liverpool (squad): Mignolet, Toure, Skrtel, Can, Markovic, Henderson, Allen, Moreno, Sterling, Coutinho, Lallana, Ward, Lovren, Johnson, Sakho, Gerrard, Williams, Lambert, Balotelli, Borini, Sturridge.
