Garza Scores 25, No. 10 Iowa Beats No. 14 Rutgers, 77-75: Report And Highlights

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Luka Garza scored 25 points and No. 10 Iowa held on for a 77-75 victory over No. 14 Rutgers at the Rutgers Athletic Center on Saturday. Garza scored 15 of his total points in the second half on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field.

Close Battle Between Iowa and Rutgers

The teams were tied at 35-all at the break and were locked again at 68-68 with 2:39 left in the game.

Geo Baker then gave Rutgers a 75-74 lead with 36 seconds remaining before Keegan Murray made a pair of free throws to put the Hawkeyes (9-2, 3-1 Big Ten) back in front. Joe Wieskamp then made 1 of 2 attempts from the charity line with 0:04 seconds to play to close out the contest for the visitors.

Murray finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals and Jordan Bohannon scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting with three 3-pointers for Iowa, which made 18 of its 23 attempts from the free-throw line.

Jacob Young had 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting with four assists and three steals for Rutgers, which had three players scoring 13 points.

Myles Johnson ended with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, Montez Mathis had 13 points, five assists and five rebounds and Geo Baker contributed 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds for the Scarlet Knights (7-2, 3-2), who shot 43.7% from the field on 31-of-71 shooting.

Wieskamp and Jack Nunge combined to grab 14 rebounds for the Hawkeyes, who edged Rutgers 40-39 on the glass and outscored the home side 24-6 in bench points.

Iowa’s junior guard Connor McCaffery picked up an ankle injury and left the game after three minutes. He did not return to open play, although he came in with 4 seconds left to make an inbound pass.

UP NEXT

Iowa visits Maryland on Thursday.

Rutgers head to No. 17 Michigan State on Tuesday.

A pair of ranked teams will battle in Big Ten Conference action on Saturday when No. 10 Iowa takes on No. 14 Rutgers at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

The matchup in Piscataway, New Jersey, with tip-off at 2:00 p.m. ET and ESPN2 will televised the game nationally. WatchESPN and the ESPNApp will also provided the live streaming.

Iowa (8-2, 2-1), which has won two of its last three games, is also 2-1 against ranked opponents this season, after beating then-No. 16 North Carolina on Dec. 8 and No. 16 Northwestern on Dec. 29.

Meanwhile, Rutgers (7-1, 3-1) is 1-1 from its two games against ranked teams. The Scarlet Knights beat No. 13 Illinois 91-88 on Dec. 20, but then lost to No. 23 Ohio State, 80-68, on Dec. 23.

Senior forward Luka Garza is leading Iowa this season with 27.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game. Junior guard Joe Wieskamp is averaging 15.2 points and 6.7 rebounds and CJ Fredrick is contributing 11.3 points per game and shooting 55.0% from 3-pointers.

Garza, Wieskamp, and Jordan Bohannon (8.6 ppg) have combined to score 55% of the Hawkeyes’ points this season.

Ron Harper Jr. is averaging 23.4 points and 7.1 rebounds, while shooting 56.4% from the field through seven games.

Montez Mathis averages 15.6 points and 4.0 rebounds and Jacob Young is scoring 15.5 points with 5.4 assists per game for the Scarlet Knights after eight games.

Iowa comes in as a  -3.5-point favorite to win this game, while ESPN’s Basketball Power Index is giving them a 68.4% to complete the odds.

Report, Highlights & Box Score – Rutgers 74, Maryland 60

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Ron Harper Jr. scored 27 points, including 19 in the second half, and No. 19 Rutgers battled to a 74-60 victory over Maryland to open Big Ten league play on a winning note Monday night.

Harper Jr. shot an efficient 10-for-17 from the field and connected on 5 of his 8 attempts from 3-points for the Scarlet Knights (5-0, 1-0), were winning their Big Ten opener for the first time in school history after going winless in Big Ten openers since joining the league in 2014.

Harper Jr., a junior guard from Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, also had five rebounds, four assists, and a couple of blocks.

Geo Baker added 15 points, three assists, and three rebounds, while Myles Johnson recorded an impressive double-double off the bench after grabbing 16 rebounds and scored 10 points for Rutgers, which extended their winning run to five successive games.

Jacob Young scored 11 points in the win as the Scarlet Knights shot 48.3% from the field and opened with five straight double-digit victories for the first time since 1934-35.

Donta Scott scored 20 and pulled down eight rebounds and Eric Ayala added 12 for Maryland (4-2, 0-1), which led by one at halftime, but was outscored 47-32 in the second half.

Trailing 28-27 coming out of the break, Rutgers used a 15-3 run midway in the game to wrestle the advantage away from the home side and made it 55-41 with 11:01 remaining.

Rutgers will hosts No. 13 Illinois on Sunday to continue Big Ten play.

Maryland, which was suffering back-to-back defeats after opening the season with four straight victories, will be off for a week before stepping out of conference to face La Salle at home on Dec. 22.

A pair of early season undefeated teams will lockhorns in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Rutgers Athletic Center when No. 21 Rutgers and Syracuse battle on Tuesday night.

What: Syracuse (3-0) vs. No. 21 Rutgers (3-0)
Where: Rutgers Athletic Center, Piscataway, New Jersey
When: Tuesday, 9:30 p.m. EST

STORYLINE: No. 21 Rutgers comes into the this game on the back of a 70-56 win over Hofstra on November, 29, Syracuse easily beat Rider by 35 on Saturday. In that game, Alan Griffin and Joseph Girard III combined for 44 points, and the Orange buried 15 3-point shots inside an empty Carrier Dome.

FEATURED PLAYERS: Ron Harper Jr. has averaged 21 points and 7.7 rebounds to lead the way for Rutgers after three games, while Jacob Young is also a big facilitator, maintaining an average of 15.3 points, 5.7 assists and 2.7 steals per game for the Scarlet Knights. Fellow guard Montez Mathis is putting out 15.3 points 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals.

The Orange are scoring 82.3 points per game and allowing 60.3. Their 46.3 rebounds per game is 12th best and the 20.7 assists per contest is currently ranked 19th in the country.
