No. 3 Villanova Opens vs. Boston College In 2K Empire Sports Classic

By:Milton Blake, College Sports Writer Published on: November 24, 2020 11:03 pm Leave a Comment

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – No. 3 Villanova is set to open its 2020-21 season Wednesday night against former Big East rival Boston College at Mohegan Sun Arena in the 2K Empire Sports Classic.

The Wildcats, who arrived on Monday night after a charter bus trip from their campus, will feature in the second game of a doubleheader at 9:30 p.m. Rhode Island, which replaced Baylor for the regular season tournament, will meet No. 18 Arizona State in a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Wednesday night games, which opens the COVID-19 pandemic campaign – will broadcast live on ESPN and stream live on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN App – with Jon Sciambi and Jay Bilas doing the call.

Villanova and Boston College last met in what was a classic battle in the 2006 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in Minneapolis, which went into overtime. The Wildcats grabbed a narrow one point – 60-59 victory in that contest.

“I have some great memories of the rivalry,” Villanova coach Jay Wright, who has a 4-4 record against the Eagles said. “There were some battles even going back to my time as an assistant with Coach (Rollie) Massimino (1987-92).”

Wright, who begins his 20th season as Villanova’s head coach admits that the team had to change some of its regular routines due to COVID-19.

“Normally, we would have come up on Tuesday for the game Wednesday,” Wright revealed. “But we needed to be up here in time to get tested on Monday night and then were tested again Tuesday.

“We have a routine we like to stick to on the road, but you have to remain flexible because there are a lot of different things to account for.

“All of us as players and coaches are excited to play games. We’re also a little anxious too. We just want to get out there.”

The Wildcats have had a few setbacks to some key players during the preseason preparations, as Senior forward Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree (shin injury) and Bryan Antoine (right shoulder) could miss both these games in the 2K Empire Sports Classic.

Senior guard Collin Gillespie and sophomore guard Justin Moore both missed preseason time because of injuries and could be limited as they eased their way back to fit.

“As coaches, we don’t really know what to expect,” Wright said. “We missed all that time last summer, had a COVID pause in the fall and then some injuries when we returned.

“We haven’t scrimmaged so it’s hard to get a handle on where we are. I think Wednesday night will be educational. I just hope it’s in a fun way.”

Wednesday night’s game will marks the 78th meeting between Boston College and Villanova, which dates back to the 1945-46 season. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 53-24.

Boston college trails Nova 3-8 all-time on a neutral site.

The Eagles will be looking at a pair of transfers to lead the team’s offense. Rich Kelly, who is a three-time Second Team All-MAAC selection from Quinnipiac and Frederick Scott, who was a three-time All-MAAC third team selection at Rider, has combined to make 296 career 3-pointers.

Meanwhile, Makai Ashton-Langford and DeMarr Langford Jr. will feature for the first time.

Central Michigan vs. Western Michigan – Watch Live And Listen Audio Coverage

By:Sports Desk Published on: November 18, 2020 7:30 pm Leave a Comment

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – It’s Central Michigan vs. Western Michigan, and it could be tiddlywinks or debate or esports: The competitive juices flow, the ire is raised.

In 2020, the stakes are remarkably high.

The Chippewas are set to entertain the Broncos on Wednesday, Nov. 18 (7 p.m./ESPN2) at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Both teams are 2-0 overall and in the Mid-American Conference, sharing the top spot in the West Division.

The game marks the midway point of the season. The winner of the annual showdown between bitter rivals takes sole possession of first place in the division with three games to play.

“I love college rivalries,” said second-year Central Michigan coach Jim McElwain, who has coached in several rivalry games, such as Michigan-Ohio State, Michigan-Michigan State, Alabama-Auburn and Florida-Georgia.

“I think it’s really what makes this sport great. People throughout this state know the importance of the Central-Western rivalry. As a coach, as a player, you just love playing in those kinds of things.”

The Chippewas are coming off a dominant 40-10 win at Northern Illinois after opening the season with a 30-27 home victory over Ohio in redshirt freshman Daniel Richardson’s first collegiate start at quarterback.

The Broncos rolled past Akron, 58-13, in their opener and then last week came from 10 points down in the final minute to beat Toledo, 41-38.

The teams play annually for the Victory Cannon, so named because at both home stadiums, Kelly/Shorts and Western’s Waldo Stadium, a canon is fired each time the home team scores points.

“It represents something and it’s something you carry with you for a year,” McElwain said.

“And then you go put it back on the line once a year. … Fun to be a part of. No matter where you’re at, knowing rivalries, respecting the rivalry, and knowing what it means to so many is really important for your team.”

No. 1 Clemson and No. 7 Miami Battle in Death Valley Live On ABC, WatchESPN

By:Jeff-Wellin Published on: October 10, 2020 12:52 pm Leave a Comment

CLEMSON, S.C. — No. 1 Clemson and No. 7 Miami will battle in a featured college football game on Saturday night and travelers are confident about putting on a strong display against the top ranked side in Death Valley.

HOW TO WATCH LIVE STREAMING

Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET in Memorial Stadium, and ABC will provide the live national broadcast. WatchESPN.com and Watch ABC will have the live streaming coverage of the game. Watch Live Stream on ABC | Follow LIVE STATS

Clemson comes into this encounter with an impressive record at home, after not losing on home turf since 2016 with it suffered a 43-42 defeat to Pitt on Nov. 12.

The Tigers, who have won five successive ACC titles, have also beaten Miami in both of their meetings since 2015 and Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz expects the Trevor Lawrence led home side to be a handful for his team.

Embed from Getty Images

The last meeting between these two sides came in the 2017 ACC Championship Game, which Clemson won 38-3, but Diaz doesn’t expect the Canes to just sit back and allow their opponents to dominate this time out.

“When you play a game like this, motivation is just the cover charge,” Diaz said. “Once you get in, Clemson is going to play very hard. They are very disruptive and aggressive on defense.

“They are going to run every front and every coverage and they are going to play extraordinarily hard and be very physical. If you don’t match that, you can forget it. You don’t have a chance. Now it is about who can function within the framework of the offense and defense.

“If you sit there and look at the logo on the side of their helmet, that is what got us in 2017. You have to focus on doing your job and if our guys do that, then it can be a football game and it is about who can protect the ball and win the explosive plays,” he added.

Clemson rolled to a 41-23 victory over Virginia last week to improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in ACC play. The Tigers extended their winning streak to 46 after last week’s result, which saw them surpassing the 1953-57 Oklahoma Sooners for the longest winning streak in FBS history.

In last Saturday’s game, Lawrence went 25-of-38 passing for 329 yards and three touchdowns – two of which went to Amari Rodgers.

Travis Etienne tallied 187 yards from scrimmage, including 73 a career-high and Clemson running back record of 114 through the air.

Meanwhile, the Miami Hurricanes (3-0, 2-0 ACC) scored 38 points in the opening half on their way to rolling over in-state rival Florida State, 52-10 inside Hard Rock Stadium in their last meeting a week ago.

College Football Week 5 Schedule: SEC, ACC And AP Top 25 Live Streams – Oct. 3

By:Sports Desk Published on: October 3, 2020 11:40 am Leave a Comment

Two games matching ranked Southeastern Conference teams, including the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, highlights Week 5 of the college football season on Saturday.

At the Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, No. 2 Alabama will welcome No. 13 Texas A&M in what should be a very entertaining encounter. Coverage of this game is on CBS with kick-off slated for 3:30 pm ET.

On Saturday, the Aggies go into the game seeking their biggest SEC victory since 2012 when Johnny Manziel when into Tuscaloosa and beat the Crimson Tide.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, Alabama holds a 90.7 percent chance of beating Texas A&M this weekend.

The Crimson Tide opened up the season last week with a 38-19 victory at Missouri, while the Aggies battled to a struggling 17-12 win over Vanderbilt.

“A victory is a victory, but all three phases didn’t play how I thought we could or how we can,” Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher said.

“We made the plays when we had to, but, man, too much inconsistency. We’ve just got to get them to play better and that’s my fault.”

Tide coach Nick Saban said: “I think it’s pretty obvious that it was a good win for the opening game of the season.”

“Any time you can win a game in the SEC, you have to be happy about that. I thought we played well in the first half, which shows the preparation and focus the players had.

“We also didn’t maintain our focus and enthusiasm throughout the second half, and it showed in our performance. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get a lot of players to make improvement throughout the week so we can play better.”

Also on the SEC ranked teams schedule, No. 7 Auburn visits No. 4 Georgia on Saturday night. This matchup, scheduled for the Sanford Stadium in Athens, will get going at 7:30 pm and ESPN will provide the live nationally broadcasting coverage. WatchESPN.com will have live online streaming.

Meanwhile, No. 1 Clemson will entertain Virginia in a rematch of last season’s Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.

Elsewhere, No. 3 Florida welcomes South Carolina at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, live on ESPN and WatchESPN, starting at Noon.

In other games, No. 9 Texas entertains TCU, defending champion LSU, which slipped to No. 20 after last week’s defeat to Mississippi State, will look to bounce back at Vanderbilt, while No. 18 Oklahoma goes to Iowa State, aiming to bounce back from last week’s shocking defeat to Kansas State

Tonight’s game sees the Boston Celtics closing out their four-game Western Conference road trip with what is expected to be a keen matchup.

Boston enters this game with a 2-1 record from the previous three games on the current road trip with the only defeat coming against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in a thrilling 114-112 contest on Sunday.

Utah, meanwhile, has dropped the last 3 games at home and is 4-6 from the last 10 games overall.

Watch No. 1 Michigan State v No. 2 Kentucky College Basketball Opener

By:Ron Howell Published on: November 5, 2019 8:42 pm Leave a Comment

NEW YORK, Sporting Alert — No. 1 Michigan State and No. 2 Kentucky will open the season in the State Farm Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night.

Tonight’s game between the nation’s top two programs will follow the showdown involving No. 3 Kansas and No. 4 Duke at the same venue.

Tip-off time is scheduled for 9:30 pm ET and ESPN will provide live television coverage. WatchESPN.com will carry live streaming online. Dan Shulman, Dick Vitale and Holly Rowe will be calling the action. WatchESPN.com | Listen Live Audio Stream | Live Stats

When this game gets underway, it will be only the second time ever that the nation’s top two programs will be opening their season against each other and the first since 1975, according to the statisticians.

ESPN’s Basketball Power Index is given the Spartans the edge in tonight’s game at 59.7 percent, but Kentucky coach John Calipari is expecting a close match-up.

Watch No. 3 Kansas v No. 4 Duke College Basketball Opener

However, Calipari believes it’s too early for these clashes.

“This is so early in the season, I can’t predict what goes on,” Calipari told reporters Sunday. “But I wish we didn’t play this game the first game of the year.

“I’ve said it before. Why don’t we have a couple of games under our belt before we do this? But, you know, everybody agreed to do it.

“I’m anxious to see really where we are right now. I expect our guys to be anxious. I don’t know what will happen with the young kids. You just don’t. You can’t predict it.”

Meanwhile, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is looking forward to see how his pre-season No. 1 side will play this game.

“You know, I’m excited about the Champions Classic, I mean, there’s no question that there’s some injuries that made it a little more difficult in some ways,” Izzo said.

“But at the same time, what a great way to start the season- for us, for our players, for our University, program, everything.”

Michigan State will be led by senior point guard Cassius Winston, who averaged 18.8 points and 7.5 assists last season and Calipari thinks he’s a quality player.

“If you’re trying to keep (Winston) from scoring, you’re going to foul,” Calipari noted. “What you’re trying to do is if the kid gets 25, just make them a hard 25.”

“He’s a good player. Plays with great pace. Plays with patience. Knows what he does well. And he’ll play for all 40 minutes. You’re not going to take him out.”

Kentucky and Michigan State have met 24 times previously with the Wildcats leading the head-to-head series 13-11.

However, the Spartans have won four of the last six overall and five of the last eight games.

They are 1-1 in the Champions Classic battles.
