Wimbledon 2016 Day 13 Men’s Final Result

By:Brittney Berreth | Staff Writer Published on: July 10, 2016 6:36 pm Leave a Comment

WIMBLEDON, Sporting Alert – Second ranked Andy Murray beat Canadian Milos Raonic in straight-sets on Centre Court on Sunday to claim his second Wimbledon title.

The British star dominated contest 6-4 7-6(3) 7-6(2) on his way to adding to the first Wimbledon title he won in 2013.

Sunday’s win handed Murray his third grand slam crown in his 11th final.

“Last time (in 2013) I was so relieved… there was so much stress and pressure, I didn’t really get a chance to enjoy it as much,” said Murray.

“I’ll make sure I enjoy this one for sure.”

The 29-year-old finally picked up a grand slam title this campaign, after in this year’s Australian and French Open finals to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

“I’ve had some great moments but also some tough losses and this win feels extra special because of the tough losses,” Murray said.

“I’m proud to get my hands on the trophy again,” he told reporters on Sunday.

After the defeat in Sunday’s final, Milos Raonic vowed that nothing will get in his way of winning a grand slam.

“This one will sting a bit,” he said.

“I’m going to work on everything. I’m not going to leave any stone unturned.

“I’m going to try to get myself back in this position, try to be better in this position.”

“I’m going to try to get fitter, stronger. I’m going to try to improve my return game, improve my serve. I can improve there. Improve my efficiency coming forward.

“There’s not one thing I’m not going to try to improve.”

Raonic had defeated No. 3 Roger Federer in the semi-finals to book his place in Sunday’s trophy battle.

Order of Play At Wimbledon 2016 on Day 13: Men’s Final

By:Brittney Berreth | Staff Writer Published on: July 10, 2016 6:15 am Leave a Comment

WIMBLEDON, Sporting Alert – No. 2 Andy Murray and No. 6 Milos Raonic will battle for the men’s singles title at Wimbledon 2016 on Center Court on Sunday.

Watch Live Streaming on ESPN3/WatchESPN. Live online updates at www.wimbledon.com

Murray enters the contest as the favourite to win the title, but Raonic will be hoping to extend his form to one more game, as he seeks to win his first Grand Slam crown.

Canada’s Raonic beat Roger Federer in five sets on Friday to secure his place in the trophy game and he’s looking forward to facing off with Murray again.

“We played in the finals of Queens a few weeks ago and I told him I hope to get a rematch in a few Sundays,” the sixth seeded Canadian said.

“Well, the disappointment I’ve sort of put behind me, at least I’ve tried to. I feel like I’m playing better tennis now.

“Now I have an even bigger toolset to face that challenge.

“Andy is one of the premier workaholics. He tries to get you doing a lot of different things. He’ll try to throw you off, give you some slower balls, some harder balls, all these kinds of things.

“I guess my goal is to keep him away from that, play it on my terms, be aggressive, not hesitate.”

Meanwhile, Murray, who defeated No. 10 Tomas Berdych 6-3 6-3 6-3 in the second semi-final on Friday, says it will be extra special to walk out on Centre Court as a British player to feature in the final on Sunday.

“Wimbledon for a lot of the players, but for British players growing up, this is the biggest competition,” Murray said.

“To get to play in front of a home crowd in a Grand Slam final is very, very rare. There’s not many players that get the opportunity to do that.

“Yeah, this one always feels a little bit more special.”

Murray, the 2013 champion, will be hoping to win his second Wimbledon title.

Wimbledon 2016 Women’s Final On Day 12

WIMBLEDON, Sporting Alert – Serena Williams defeated Angelique Kerber in straight sets, 7-5 6-3 to secure her seventh Wimbledon women’s singles title and 22nd Grand Slam.

“Finally I got to 22,” Williams said after her victory.

Williams, who came into the match as the favourite, dominated the contest on Saturday to finally win a Grand Slam this year, after coming into Wimbledon 2016 win a 0-2 record from in Grand Slam final.

Kerber defeated Serena in the final of the Australian Open in January, but the No. 4 seeded German had no answers for the top-ranked player’s powerful serving this time around.

Kerber, who defeated Serena’s older sister Venus Williams in her semi-finals on Thursday, was hoping to do the same on Saturday, but found the challenge a bit tougher against the 34-year-old.

Serena Williams dominated the battle this weekend, especially with her serves, with the American winning 89-percent of her points on the first serve.

The shakiest moment during the contest came in the second set when Kerber picked up a first break point at 3-3.

However, from then on it was all Williams, who responded well with consecutive aces to stay ahead.

The U.S. women’s tennis icon took advantage some nervous plays from Kerber to take a 5-3 lead before going on to serve for the title.

Serena was in no mood to prolong the contest either as she blasted to 40-0 before finishing things off with the next play.

The contest lasted for 80 minutes, as the world number one goes on to equal Steffi Graf’s professional era record of 22 grand slam women’s singles crowns.

“It’s been incredibly difficult not to think about it (Graf’s record),” Serena said.

“I had a couple of tries this year but lost to two great opponents, one of them being Angelique. But it makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it.”

She added: “Thanks you guys for being out here to see number 22, this is awesome.”

LONDON, Sporting Alert – Semi-final results from men’s singles at Wimbledon 2016 on Day 12, Friday, July 8.

In the first semi-finals, No. 3 Roger Federer was beaten 6-3 6-7(3) 4-6 7-5 6-3 by No. 6 Milos Raonic in a battling contest on Centre Court.

In the day’s second semi-final on the same court, British number one and tournament second seed Andy Murray defeated Tomas Berdych in straight sets to punch his ticket to final as well.

FIRST SEMIS IN FIVE

Friday’s five-set defeat was Federer’s first loss in 11 trips in Wimbledon semi-finals, as he was unable to outlast the Canadian in the closing sets.

Raonic took the first set, but the Switzerland veteran rallied to take a 2-1 lead heading into a decisive fifth.

However, the seven-time champion was unable to see off the match – losing the last two sets, including the fourth, where Raonic battled back to clinch a 7-5 win.

The defeat ended Federer’s quest to win an eighth Wimbledon title.

“It’s my dream to win an 8th title here. But it’s not the only reason I play tennis,” said Federer.

Federer, who was playing in his 18th championships, last won the Wimbledon title in 2012. He was runner-up in 2014 and 2015.

Meanwhile, Murray, the 2013 champion beat Czech 10th seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets to reach the final and he will start as the favourite.

Murray, who became the tournament favourite the moment defending champion and world number one Novak Djokovic was beaten by Sam Querrey in the early rounds, secured a 6-3 6-3 6-3 victory on Friday to reach his third Wimbledon final.

Wimbledon 2016 final will be on Sunday.

Wimbledon 2016 Men’s Semi-final Order of Play: Day 12

By:Brittney Berreth | Staff Writer Published on: July 8, 2016 6:47 am Leave a Comment

LONDON, Sporting Alert – The semi-finals of the men’s singles at Wimbledon 2016 will take place on Day 12 on Friday.

Live streaming will be on ESPN3/WatchESPN and ESPN | Live online streaming highlights at www.wimbledon.com

The four men who will be in action – hunting two places – are Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Milos Raonic and Tomas Berdych.

Taking the court first on Centre Court is Canada’s No. 6 seed Milos Raonic, who will face No. 3 seed Roger Federer of Switzerland, starting at 8:00 am ET.

The seven-times champion Federer enters these semi-finals full of confidence after shockingly surviving an exit in the quarter-finals.

Federer recovered from being two sets down to beat Croatian sixth-seed Marin Cilic to reach his 11th Wimbledon semi-final.

“When you’re down two sets to love, 3-3, 0-40, it’s a moment when it’s not in your control anymore,” the 34-year-old said after overcoming the huge deficit on Wednesday.

“But I fought, I tried, I believed. At the end I got it done.”

The Swiss veteran will take on the six seeded Raonic, who ended the surprising run of American No. 28 seed Sam Querrey 6-4 7-5 5-7 6-4 in his quarter-finals.

The coach of the Canadian, John McEnroe, was left stunned by the way Federer was able to pull off the comeback victory in his quarter-final match.

“I cannot believe Roger Federer won that match. Unbelievable tennis. How did he get out of that?

“You’ve got to love the courage that he’s able to find a way to do that, that’s a killer loss.”

Meanwhile, in the day’s second semi-final match, No. 2 Andy Murray will take on Tomas Berdych, the 10th seed at Wimbledon 2016.

Great Britain number one Murray battled out a five-set thriller against Frenchman No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals on Wednesday night.

His competitor, Czech Republic’s Berdych, beat Frenchman Lucas Pouille to book his second Wimbledon semi-final and he could be a handful for Murray in their last four battle.

Serena, according to the bookies begins as the favourite to advance to the final, but the American is bracing for a very challenging encounter against a confident Russian player, who has a very good serve and is ranked second behind Serena in aces at Wimbledon 2016.

“She has a really good grass-court game,” Serena said. “She has a really good serve, and she’s also very aggressive. She comes to the net.

“I know her game really, really well. It’s good to play someone’s game that you know. I’ll be ready for it.”

Vesnina, looking ahead to the clash said: “That’s a dream semifinal. I think nothing can be better than playing against Serena in semifinal on Centre Court at Wimbledon. It’s special.”

In the second semifinals, Venus Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion, will have her hands full against the fourth-ranked Kerber of Germany.

Kerber, the 2016 Australian Open champion, will be making her second Wimbledon appearance, and she already has a plan for Venus.

“I know that my serve should be a little bit better against Venus,” Kerber said.

Venus, who last won the title in 2008 and was beaten by Serena in 2009, is enjoying her best form in years, but she doesn’t feel out of place.

“Yeah, semifinals feels good,” Venus said. “But it doesn’t feel foreign at all, let’s put it that way. … Yeah, the road was six years.

“They go by fast thankfully. But I’ve been blessed, been really blessed, to have an opportunity to be here, have had an opportunity in the past to do this.

“I don’t have any regrets about anything that’s taken place in between. It’s been a journey, but it’s made me stronger.”

Federer Comeback: Wimbledon 2016 Quarterfinals Results Day 10

By:Brittney Berreth | Staff Writer Published on: July 6, 2016 12:54 pm Leave a Comment

LONDON, Sporting Alert – Results from men’s singles quarterfinal matches on Day 10 at Wimbledon 2016, Wednesday July 6.

Much of the highlight was surrounded around Roger Federer, who pulled off a remarkable comeback to book his place into the last four.

Federer started slowly and found himself trailing by two sets to No. 9 Marin Cilic of Croatia on Centre Court.

However, the No. 3 seeded seven-time Wimbledon champion rallied from the massive deficit, including fighting off three match points to get the better of Cilic, 6-7(4) 4-6 6-3 7-6(9) 6-3, in five sets and earned his semi-final spot.

Federer will next face Canada’s No. 6 seed Milos Raonic, who ended the surprising run of American No. 28 seed Sam Querrey, with a 6-4 7-5 5-7 6-4 result.

Unlike Federer, Raonic got off to brisk start – winning the opening two sets before wrapping things up in the fourth.

Querrey, who earlier in the tournament defeated No. 1 Novak Djokovic, won the third second to cut the deficit to 2-1.

However, Raonic went on to finish off the contest in the fourth set and setup a battle with Federer.

“I thought Milos played great today. I don’t think I played poorly at all,” said Querrey. “I knew he had a big serve, obviously, but I was really impressed with his net game.

“He really didn’t miss a volley today. He kept coming forward, kept the pressure on me, and I felt it.

“Kudos to him for playing a very good, clean match.”

No. 2 Andy Murray also advanced to semifinal at Wimbledon, following a hard fought 7-6(10) 6-1 3-6 4-6 6-1 win over France’s No. 12 seed 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Murray shot to a 2-0 lead in the match, but the Frenchman stormed back to win the next two sets to even things up at 2-2.

Murray then cruised to a 6-1 win in the fifth set to advance into the semis.

Also on Wednesday, the tenth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic beat No. 32 Lucas Pouille of France 7-6(4) 6-3 6-2 in his quarterfinal.

Berdych and Murray will meet in one of two semifinal matches.
