MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Wayne Rooney has been shockingly dropped by Manchester United for today’s Barclays Premier League game at Old Trafford against Newcastle United.
Rooney, who was very disappointing in the 1-1 draw with Swansea City on Sunday, was not even in the team for today’s game, with Javier Hernandez getting the starting nod alongside Robin van Persie.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson also made changes in his midfield as the experienced Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs both start with Tom Cleverley, who was also poor against Swansea and Ashley Young making way.
Captain Nemanja Vidic was back on the bench with Rio Ferdinand coming back into the team. Chris Smalling starts at right-back, but there was no Phil Jones.
Danny Welbeck, who is reportedly ill, didn’t make the Manchester United bench either, with Ferguson taking a chance on his attacking options.
Newcastle United meanwhile, are without hard working midfielder Cheik Tiote who is out suspended, which opens the way for 19-year-old Burundi midfielder Gael Bigirimana to start in his place and show the manager what he can do.
Newcastle are also without Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Yohan Cabaye (groin), Ryan Taylor (knee) and Steven Taylor (hamstring), who all miss the game because of injuries.
Demba Ba, linked with Liverpool and Arsenal starts upfront today again.
