PARIS, Sporting Alert – Thiago Silva believes Paris Saint Germain is bigger than Manchester United or any other clubs in the English Premier League.
The Brazilian defender was speaking ahead of the proposed transfer move by Angel Di Maria from Old Trafford to the French champions.
Di Maria is reportedly in Qatar having a medical on Monday in an attempt to complete his £44.5million switch and Silva reasoned that the Argentine winger will be making a step up when he leaves Manchester United for the Paris outfits.
The defender added that only Barcelona and Real Madrid sit above them on the list of top clubs in Europe.
“People now need to respect PSG as one of the big clubs in Europe,” Silva was quoted as saying.
“Real Madrid and Barcelona are probably on another level, but after that if you join PSG you are you probably taking a step up.”
Paris Saint Germain, which also feature the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, David Luiz, Javier Pastore and Lucas Moura – among others – defeated Manchester United 2-0 in their last preseason meeting in the International Champions Cup last month.
The Ligue 1 champions also dumped English Premier League champions Chelsea out of the Champions League at the quarterfinal stages last season, and Silva also made note of that.
“We went further than any English clubs in Europe last year,” he added.
Interestingly though, PSG’s most highlighted player, Ibrahimovic has been linked with a move to Manchester United and the Serie A, while Cavani and defender Lucas Digne are also being linked with moves to England.
Ibrahimovic has scored 75 goals from 91 appearances for PSG, and reports claimed the forward could be on his way to Italy with his former club AC Milan believed to be the destination.
Following his team’s 2-0 victory over Lyon in the French Super Cup, the Swede said: “It could be that this was my last game for PSG.”
“Next week I will take a decision over my future.”
So are PSG really bigger than the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal among the elites in Europe?
