The silence in Mackey Arena told the story.
No. 10 Iowa State dismantled No. 1 Purdue 81-58 on Saturday, handing the Boilermakers their worst nonconference home loss in AP poll history. The 23-point margin matched the largest home defeat ever by a top-ranked team.
Milan Momcilovic led the way for the visitors with 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor. The Cyclones buried 11 three-pointers and shot 59% in the second half, turning what started as a competitive game into a demolition.
“They took us to the woodshed,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said.
Iowa State (9-0) held just a four-point edge at halftime. Then the avalanche began.
The Cyclones opened the second half with an 11-0 run. Tamin Lipsey, Momcilovic and Killyan Toure drained three straight three-pointers. Suddenly, Purdue trailed 48-33 with over 17 minutes remaining.
The lead ballooned to 27 points. Toure added 13 points with three triples along with five assists, Blake Buchanan scored 12 and nine rebounds, while Joshua Jefferson contributed 11 points on three long-range shots. Lipsey led the Cyclones with eight assists to go with his nine points and five rebounds.
Purdue (8-1) never recovered. The Boilermakers shot just 41% overall and a dismal 4-of-18 from beyond the arc. They committed 15 turnovers and made only 6 of 14 free throws.
“It was an avalanche,” Painter admitted. “I feel they just stole our spirit.”
Braden Smith led Purdue with 11 points. Oscar Cluff and Daniel Jacobsen each scored 10. Star forwards Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn struggled mightily, combining for just 11 points on 4-of-19 shooting.
“They executed better than us,” Kaufman-Renn said. “They hit some shots.”
The loss snapped Purdue’s 36-game nonconference home winning streak. For a program with Final Four aspirations, the defeat exposed glaring weaknesses.
“Obviously this sucks right now, but it will probably be a good thing showing us how much better we have to get,” Smith said.
Cyclones coach T.J. Otzelberger praised his team’s performance. “We played our absolute best,” he said. “When you play an elite competitor, you know it’s going to take your best.”
Purdue hosts Minnesota on Wednesday. Iowa State welcomes in-state rival Iowa on Thursday night.
