Tottenham vs Aston Villa: starting lineups, how to watch

LONDON —— The first Premier League game of 2023 will come from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium here in London on Sunday, and these are the startling lineups for both Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Fans in the United States can watch this game live on Peacock while those viewing in the UK can watch the coverage live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event, kick-off at 9:00 am ET. As for the team news, Tottenham welcome back defender Cristian Romero after he returned to training following his World Cup success with Argentina and he starts.

Hugo Lloris, who was in the final with France, also returns to the starting team, with Fraser Forster and Eric Dier making way from the team that started in the draw with Brentford on Boxing Day.

There’s a big surprise in attack, as well as Dejan Kulusevski missing out, and Bryan Gil coming into the team for his first Premier League start. Japhet Tanganga was replaced by Ben Davies in the other change for Tottenham.

Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur and forward Richarlison both miss out with the injuries they sustained at the World Cup for Uruguay and Brazil, respectively.

For Aston Villa, meanwhile, Argentine World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is back in the squad but is only available from the bench. Robin Olsen keeps his place in goal, while midfielder Jacob Ramsey and defender Diego Carlos remain out.

Jamaican international Leon Bailey, Douglas Luiz, Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins and Lucas Digne are all among the starters today for Spurs.
