MIAMI, FL, Sporting Alert — Gary Trent Jr. scored a career-high 30 points and knocked down some big 3-pointers in the second half and No. 5 Duke rallied to beat No. 25 Miami 83-75 on Big Monday.
“We made big steps tonight,” said Trent Jr., who made some fantastic plays down the stretch.
Trent Jr., who still recovering from a virus, shot 6 for 9 from long-range to drive the Blue Devils (15-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) forward.
Speaking about his career night performance on offense, the freshman told ESPN: “I simply just find opened spots. my teammates kept finding me.
“Coach drew up some great plays for and I just did my job.”
Freshman guard Trevon Duval finished with 17 points, eight assists and five rebounds, Wendell Carter Jr. added a double-double with 15 points, 14 rebounds and two steals for Duke, who won the game after deciding not to give up when it trailed by double figures.
“We locked up and we fought on defense,” Trent Jr. said. “That’s all we had to do,” he added about the comeback victory. “It was a Great team win.”
Marvin Bagley III didn’t have his best game tonight, but the freshman standout still finished with a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for Duke.
Lonnie Walker IV led Miami with 19 points and four steals, while Dewan Huell added a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the defeat.
Aanthony Lawrence II and Chris Lykes each scored 13 points for the Hurricanes (13-4, 2-3).
BIG RUNS IN SECOND HALF
After trailing 44-42 at halftime, Miami started the second half with a 19-4 run to take a 13 point lead and looked certain to hand Duke a third defeat this season.
The home team led 66-53 with eight minutes remaining.
However, Duke used an 18-0 run to take back the lead and went up by five points with just over three minutes to play.
Carter Jr. used a baseline spin move for a layup to give Duke a 73-69 lead with 2:51 left, as the visitors used a 29-9 spurt to seal the contest.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski grabbed his 1,087 career win — best in the country.
