DES MOINES, Iowa (Sporting Alert) – Sprint superstar Tyson Gay sizzled to a world-leading time of 9.75 seconds to win the men’s 100m dash at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday night.
Gay, who got off to a slow start, got up to his top speed quickly to power past Justin Gatlin and break the championship record here.
Gatlin, who confirmed that he is carrying a hamstring injury, was second in 9.89, with Charles Silmon (9.98) making his first American team by finishing third.
The winning performs confirmed that Gay is certainly in great shape and is on the right path to challenge the Jamaicans, led by world record holder Usain Bolt and reigning world champion Yohan Blake later this summer.
Michael Rodgers ran 9.98 for fourth.
Gardner Blazes To National Crown
English Gardner, the two-time NCAA champion produced another personal best and world-lead equalling of 10.85 seconds to win the women’s 100m and booked her place on the team to the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia later this summer.
The race saw the first five women going under 11-seconds as another NCAA star, Octavious Freeman from the University of Central Florida, also setting a new personal best of 10.87 for second and Alexandria Anderson taking third in 10.91.
Jeneba Tarmoh clocked 10.93 for fourth, while Barbara Pierre, who had run 10.85 to set a world-leading in the semi-finals faded to fifth in 10.94.
