Champaign, Illinois (Sporting Alert) — Tyler Griffey hit the game-winning layup at the buzzer and Illinois upset No. 1 Indiana 74-72 at Assembly Hall on Thursday night.

Indiana (20-3) dominated the first half and took a half-time lead of 41-29, but the Fighting Illini (16-8) rallied to outscore the top ranked Hoosiers 45-31 in the second half to steal the victory.

D.J. Richardson paced Illinois with 23 points, while Brandon Paul added 21 in the win.

Griffey finished with 14 points, including the game-winning bucket after he broke away from his marker, to help the hosts upset their more fancied opponents.

Cody Zeller led Indiana with 14 points and nine rebounds in the heartbreaking defeat.

Will Sheehey added 13 points, while Christian Watford collected 12 points and eight boards and Jordan Hulls, 11 points for the Hoosiers.

ROLLING BACK: The last time the Illinois Fighting Illini’s defeated a No. 1 team was in 2004 against a Chris Paul-led Wake Forest side, with their only other win over a top ranked program coming in 1979 against a Magic Johnson-led Michigan State team.
