Powell, the former world record holder got a very good start and looked well on his way to winning in his outdoor opener until he was run down over the last 40-metres by a very determined Gatlin, who delighted with his performance.

The world indoor 60m champion posted a seasonal best time of 9.87 seconds, the third fastest this season behind world record holder’s Usain Bolt’s 9.82 and world champion Yohan Blake’s 9.84.

Gatlin’s time also makes him the quickest American so far this season, as Walter Dix’s 9.85secs was under in a +2.5 m/s wind reading.

The victory by Gatlin on Friday proves that the American who recently returned from a four-year ban after testing positive for excessive levels of testosterone, is in good shape and is expected to challenge Tyson Gay for the title at the U.S. Championships later this summer.

Gatlin won the 100m at the 2004 Athens Olympics and then returned the following in Helsinki to take the world sprint double titles.
