After holding off the champions for most of the game, Steve Kean’s Blackburn side went behind when winger Antonio Valencia beat Paul Robinson in the 81st minute.
Substitute Ashley Young then added a second minutes later – much to the delight of the manager Sir Alex Ferguson – giving United a strong hold on the title.
“It was a massive game for us, we knew we could go five points clear at the top, it was a great result and a good performance,” Young said on BBC Sport.
“It’s a crucial time of the season. It’s a squad game and we are all here to do a job.
“We had to be patient, we knew we could create chances. It’s a massive lead for us now.”
Ferguson said: “It was a long night we had to persevere and we got our rewards for it. We weren’t making clear cut chances, we put in a lot of great crosses but didn’t finish them off.
“We had them under the cosh but they were dangerous on the break. The goals came so late which typifies the history of the club.”
Manchester United are surely rounding into form again after the dismal outing in Europe.
