(Sporting Alert) — Real Madrid took a big step towards reaching the Champions League semi-finals with a commanding 3-0 win over Galatasaray at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.
Star attacker Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the ninth minute when he coolly slotted over the advancing Fernando Muslera after being played through with a lovely ball by midfielder Mesut Ozil.
Karim Benzema doubled the lead on the half hour mark when he trapped well and then fired past Muslera in the bottom corner of the goal before second-half substitute Gonzalo Higuain headed home for Real Madrid’s third in the 73rd minute.
“We played a serious and well balanced match. We have worked well as a team and we defended well and counter-attacked with danger,” Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho said after the game.
“We knew that at this stage in the competition, any detail can be important, a goal that you score or concede can make a big difference.
“The team played a serious match and did so with humility, respect for the opponent and stopped their attack. Real Madrid played well and deserved the win.”
In the night’s second game, Borussia Dortmund wasted several chances and were held 0-0 at Malaga in their quarter-final first leg game at La Rosaleda.
