The Argentine forward finished off a cross from Isaac Cuenca in the 17th minute of play to matched the previous mark of 232 set by Cesar Rodriguez some 57 years ago, before securing the mark for himself in the 68th minute.

Messi then added another goal and completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute when he rounded goalkeeper Julio Cesar and slotted into the roof of the net.

The hat-trick was Messi’s eighth overall of the season for Barcelona. He has six in La Liga this season, the same as Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi, 24, has now scored 54 goals in all competitions for Barcelona this term, including 34 league goals and 12 Champions League goals for the season so far.

“[Lionel Messi] is defining an era. He is the best,” Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdez said.
