BARCELONA (Sporting Alert) — Lionel Messi scored twice on his return from injury and Barcelona hammered Getafe 4-0 in the Spanish Copa Del Rey at Camp Nou on Wednesday.
Messi, returning from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for five-weeks, replaced Andres Iniesta shortly after the hour mark and went on to score two late goals as Barcelona cruised to the cup victory.
Cesc Fabregas also scored a brace in the win, including a 63rd minute penalty, just before Messi, who normally takes the spot kicks, entered the pitch.
Messi started the game on the bench and played for almost 30 minutes in his return, an encouraging sign for head coach Gerardo Martino, as well as Barcelona and Argentina fans.
Barcelona will now look to this weekend’s La Liga top of the table clash against Atletico Madrid.
