After tapping home from close range to give Manchester United the lead with less than two-minutes on the clock, Van Persie latched onto an inch-perfect pass from Wayne Rooney and stunningly hammered home his left-footer past the advancing Brad Guzan.

“Robin van Persie has been unbelievable. Tonight he was unstoppable,” United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said.

“The second goal reminded me of myself, but I can’t remember when. He scored exactly the same goal against Arsenal.

“Of the century for me. It was a marvellous hit, head down, over the ball, perfect timing – a magnificent strike.

“His early form in the first six months was fantastic. He had the spell where he didn’t score but he was unbelievable tonight.”

Van Persie left Arsenal to win trophies and the Netherlands international was delighted to lift one in his first campaign.

“I’m very happy but it’s weird. I had to wait for so long for my first title and it’s a great feeling.”

Asked if it was the fitting moment to score a hat-trick in the game that won United the title, he told Sky Sports: “It didn’t really matter who scored as long as we won this game and we did win this game.

“From the first minute everyone played well and everyone wanted it. It was great to score so early and it was a fantastic game of football.”
