MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has not travelled with Premier League club’s pre-season touring squad, while goalkeeper David De Gea and striker Robin van Persie have been given more rest time.
Manager David Moyes and his 19 man squad flew to Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday to begin preparation for the upcoming season. The tour is part of the Tour 2013 presented by Aon.
Defenders Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Phil Jones and Fabio were all included in the team, but there were no Vidic and the EPL champions gave no immediate explanation as to why he was left out.
Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck were the only strikers selected for the tour, while Wilfried Zaha, who returned to training on Monday, has also been selected.
Van Persie, De Gea and Shinji Kagawa have all been given extra time off to recover fully from the busy summer of international and other commitments, but will join up with the squad later this month.
Van Persie and De Gea will join the squad in Sydney, with the club confirming that Kagawa will link up with the rest of his team-mates in Japan on July 21.
Also missing from the traveling party is Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, who needs more time off from international duties as well.
As predicted, Moyes has left without Chris Smalling (foot), Ashley Young (ankle) and Nani (broken nose) who are all still missing due to injuries.
