LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Kenyans Wilson Kipsang and Mary Keitany were crowned champions at the 2012 London Marathon, which took place on Sunday morning.
Wilson Kipsang, the Frankfurt Marathon champion from last year and the second-fastest marathon runner ever, came into the event as one of the favourites, and took his chance to win his first London Marathon title with a performance of 2hrs 04mins 44secs.
He defeated Martin Lel of Kenya and Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia, while World record-holder Patrick Makau dropped out the race with less than half of the race to go and defending champion Emmanuel Mutai Kenya was seventh, at 2:08.01.
The women’s race saw defending champion Mary Keitany repeating with a 2:18:37 African record performance to lead an all Kenyan podium finish.
