BLACKSBURG, Virginia, Sporting Alert – Justin Bibbs scored 18 points and led six Virginia Tech players in double-digit scoring as the Hokies upset No. 5 Duke 89-75 in ACC opener for both teams on Saturday.
Virginia Tech (12-1) entered the game as the underdog but started strongly and never trailed as it went into halftime leading 47-31.
Ahmed Hill scored 17 points, Justin Robinson added 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds and Seth Allen finished with 14 points and five assists for the Hokies, who shot 61.5 percent from 3-point range and 55.2 percent from the floor overall.
Luke Kennard led Duke with (12-2) with 34 points and seven rebounds, while Freshman Jayson Tatum added 18 points and seven boards in the defeat for the Blue Devils, who struggled from behind the arc after going just 5 for 16 from long-range.
Amile Jefferson, who is averaging 14.2 points and 10.8 rebounds this season was held to just nine points with 12 rebounds in the New Year’s Eve defeat.
Duke played without junior guard and preseason All-America Grayson Allen, who watched from the bench after he was suspended indefinitely by the program after another tripping incident ten-days ago for the third such incident in his career.
Star freshman Harry Giles came off the bench to chip in eight rebounds in the defeat for the Blue Devils.
