LYON, Sporting Alert – Portugal will be without key centre-back Pepe for today’s Euro 2016 semifinal clash against Wales at Stade de Lyon.

The Real Madrid player came into the week doubtful for the contest, but head coach Fernando Santos had hoped that he would have been ready to play a part on Wednesday.

Pepe missed training on Monday and trained on his own with the fitness coach on Tuesday.

He was also optimistic about featuring in the matchup, but lost the battle in a fitness test – failing to recover from a thigh muscle injury.

So with Pepe missing out, Santos has decided to hand 34-year-old former captain Bruno Alves his first minutes of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Danilo has come in as a replacement for the suspended William Carvalho and will start as the holding midfielder.

Raphael Guerreiro also returns for Portugal and will play at left back in a back four that also includes Cedric Soares and the improving Jose Fonte

For Wales, meanwhile, boss Chris Coleman will be without the suspended Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davies, who are replaced by Andy King, and James Collins in midfield and in defense.

Today’s clash is expected to be centred around the battle between Real Madrid teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, who will lead their respective team’s attacking line.
