SAN DIEGO, Calif., Sporting Alert — Watch live streaming coverage of the Gold Cup 2017 clash between Jamaica and Curacao in Group C at Qualcomm Stadium in California.
The Reggae Boyz were shockingly beaten 2-1 by Curacao in the CFU Caribbean Cup final two-weeks-ago and they will be hoping to turn the tables on their opponent in the rematch on Sunday.
Curacao are backing themselves to repeat the result from the last meeting, but Jamaica head coach Theodore Whitmore, who welcome several players from MLS in his squad, believes he now has the right mix to win the group opener.
“We are aware of the fact that we lost to them in the Caribbean Cup final, but this is the Gold Cup,” declared Whitmore in the Jamaica Observer.
“We have experience and a new set of players, and we have ammunition that works like AK-47 rifles, to get past them.
“They like to pass the ball and keep possession, but I think we need to concentrate on what we want to do, because most of all we didn’t press the ball as a team when we played against them, and we still got chances and failed to put them away, and at this level given half chances you have to turn them home,” he added.
Among the players set to feature in the Jamaican lineup for the Group C opener are Darren Mattocks, who scored goals in the semi-final and the final of the 2015 Gold Cup tournament, and Alvas Powell.
Kemar Lawrence, captain Andre Blake, Jermaine Taylor, Je-Vaugh Watson, Oneil Fisher and Corey Burke are also expected to be part of the starting lineup.
The likes of Wes Morgan, Michael Hector and Adrian Mariappa — who Whitmore wanted — were unavailable for the Jamaican roster.
Meanwhile, Curacao is expected to be led by forward Gino van Kessel, defender Cuco Martina and midfielder Leandro Bacuna.
The second game of the Group C doubleheader will see defending champion Mexico taking on El Salvador.
Live stream of this one will be at 9 p.m. ET on Fox Sports GO and FOX Soccer Match Pass. Fox Sports 1 USA will also provide the live television broadcasting coverage.
