Argentina came from behind twice to take the 4-3 victory in a game that saw both teams had a player sent off just before the end of the contest.
Brazil opened the scoring spree through Romulo in the 23rd minute, when he broke from the wall during a free-kick to slot home, but when Messi equalised in the 31st minute you knew there were going to be goals on the day.
And it was Messi, who provided another goal for Argentina when he rounded the goalkeeper and slot home into an empty net to make the score 2-1 at half-time.
Brazil kept pressing and were rewarded with the first two goals in the second half when midfielder Oscar netted in the 56th minute and forward Hulk scored in the 72nd to give Brazil a 3-2 lead.
Argentina then drew level through Federico Fernandez when he headed home a corner kick taken by Sergio Aguero and then went on the go for the winner.
And just as we expected, it was Messi, who provided the winner and what a goal it was.
The Barcelona star forward picked up the ball on the right-hand side of the field before wiggling his way close to goal, prior to firing a brilliant shot for the 4-3 win in the 84th minute.
Substitute Ezequiel Lavezzi of Argentina and Marcelo of Brazil were sent off.
