PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL (Sporting Alert) — Leader Sergio Garcia has been paired with Tiger Woods in the third round of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass on Saturday.
The two have been very impressive in the first two rounds and both were quite happy after Friday’s action.
Garcia’s satisfying day saw him making seven straight putts, with six of them for birdie, on his way to equalling his best score at the TPC Sawgrass with a 7-under 65.
The Spaniard is looking forward to battling with Woods again on Saturday, but said he isn’t looking to measure myself against the world no. 1.
“We’ll see what happens,” said Garcia. “But I don’t have to measure myself against anybody. I know what I want to try to do.
“Any given day, I can shoot a round like this, and any other day he can shoot a good round and beat me.
“There are going to be good days and not-so good days, so you’ve just got to enjoy the good ones as much as possible.”
Reflecting on Friday’s second round Garcia added, “I hit the ball very well, hit a lot of good iron shots and gave myself a lot of good birdie opportunities. I wasn’t able to convert many of them on the front nine, which was 10 to 18 for me.
“But then I got going on the back nine, and I got on a great run there where I made a lot of putts in a row and managed to make those six birdies in a seven hole stretch which is nice.
Woods, in the meantime, is one-shot behind the leader and finished with his second straight 67.
The American also broke his own 36-hole record at Sawgrass by six shots.
“Even though I haven’t played well here in the past, I’ve still won here,” Woods said.
“I know how to get around this golf course. This course, more than most, really tests every facet of your game.”
Woods and Garcia, who tee off at 2:40 ET Saturday, have good company in the race for the title in Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell who are both lurking.
Westwood and Chappell both shot 6-under 66 in Friday’s second round.
