(Sporting Alert) — Brad Guzan will start in goal, while Clint Dempsey captain the United States in tonight’s CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Guzan takes the place of regular first choice Tim Howard, who is out injured.

Tottenham forward Dempsey, in the meantime takes over as captain for defender Carlos Bocanegra, who was dropped from squad on Monday.

“Clint is one of our most experienced players and ready to assume a more vocal leadership role,” USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann said on Wednesday.

“He has been huge for us in World Cup qualifying so far and is already one of our key leaders. We know he will do a great job for these two important games.”

USA will be hoping to get off a winning start and have handed the on form Jozy Altidore the starting place in the forward position with Eddie Johnson and Terrance Boyd on the bench.

Brek Shea and Kyle Beckerman are also on the bench, but Jermaine Jones, Herculez Gomez and Michael Bradley all start.

Bryan Ruiz, who plays for Barclays Premier League side Fulham is expected to be a handful for the United State defenders, while Arsenal forward Joel Campbell is on the bench for Costa Rica.
