Brazil and Chile played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra-time and the hosts needed a penalty kick shoot-out victory to book a quarter-finals place.
David Luiz gave Brazil the lead, even though it looked like it was an own in the 18th minute, before Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez side-footed past Julio Cesar for Chile to score an equalizer in the 32nd.
Both teams had numerous chances to winning the game during the 120-plus minutes of action, but some poor finishing combined with some excellent goalkeeping saw the same ended in a draw.
In the end, goalkeeper Cesar made back-to-back saves and Neymar slots home the decisive penalty to help Brazil booked its quarter-finals place.
