Mexican striker Javier Chicharito Hernandez scored a last gasp winner in the 90th minute, while Jonny Evans netted at both ends of the pitch in a thrilling encounter, one in which Newcastle truly felt slipped away from them.
James Perch game the visitors a fourth minute lead after poor goalkeeping by David De Gea gift the Newcastle player a simple goal, but Evans responded for Manchester United in the 25th minute.
The United defender than scored a controversial own goal to give Newcastle a 2-1 half-time lead.
Patrice Evra leveled things again in the 58th, before a blistering strike from forward Papiss Cisse restored the Newcastle lead.
Robin van Persie blasted past Tim Krul for the 3-3 scored before Chicharito gave Sir Alex Ferguson a dream win – one the boss said he wished was an end of season title winning fixture.
“I wish this was the last game of the season!” Ferguson said on Manchester United official website at www.manutd.com.
“What this tells you about is the courage of our team. Fantastic courage. The players never gave in. We improved our game enormously [after trailing 2-1 at half-time] which we had to do.”
He added on manutd.com: “Chicharito deservedly got the winner, his movement and courage were unbelievable.
“He and van Persie were absolutely phenomenal, I thought.”
He continued: “It’s a really significant result for us. It puts in a good position. As I always say of December, it’s a month that tells you everything.
“And when we come to the end of the Wigan game on 1 January, we’ll still be top of the league.”
