Why Did Manchester United Forward Wayne Rooney Miss FA Cup Clash With Chelsea.
LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Wayne Rooney has picked up a groin injury which forced him to miss Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final replay against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday.
Rooney was surprisingly omitted from the Manchester United squad to face Chelsea after also missing the win at Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League and Saturday.
Following concerns, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the England striker suffered a groin problem while on international duty in the 1-1 draw against Montenegro last week.
Ferguson is hoping the forward will recover in time to face city rivals Manchester City in derby clash at Old Trafford next Monday.
“He got a groin injury playing for England and he wasn’t 100 per cent yesterday,” Ferguson told ITV prior to Manchester United’s game today.
“There’s no point risking a player with a groin injury.
“Hopefully he’ll be ready for next Monday’s game.”
