In other scores, Brighton & Hove Albion easily brushed aside newly promoted Luton Town 4-1, fellow promoted side Sheffield United suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace, while Everton were beaten by a similar score by Fulham, and AFC Bournemouth earned a late 1-1 draw at home against West Ham United.
The season opener on Friday, defending champions Manchester City secured a comfortable 3-0 win over new boys Burnley.
