There was also a victory for France, which defeated Ukraine.
England went ahead in the first half through Liverpool striker Andy Carroll, who leaped high to head home a delivery from captain Steven Gerrard, but goals from Glen Johnson (og) in the 49th and Olof Mellberg in the 59th minute saw Sweden take a 2-1 lead in the second half.
However, substitute Theo Walcott levelled and the scores and then he found striker Welbeck with a cross which he back-heeled home for the super winner.
“I’m happy with the finish and to get the three points, but it’s quite disappointing to let two goals in at the start of the second half,” Welbeck said.
“I think we came back well and stuck together and our team spirit showed. When we went behind we still had the belief there and the team spirit showed through.
“We’ll get back to Poland, get our recovery done, and obviously turn our attention to the Ukraine. We’ll go on from there and try to get three more points.”
The first game, which was delayed because of bad weather, France defeat co-hosts Ukraine 2-0 with the goals coming from Jeremy Menez in the 53rd and Yohan Cabaye three-minutes later.
